The Unpopular Best Option for NY

According to Buster Olney, granted not the best of sources, Bobby Abreu may be forced to take a one year deal due to the market.

If that is the case, I see little reason why the Mets shouldn’t get him. The biggest complaints I’ve heard about Abreu from Yankee and Philly fans are his defense and a lack of being clutch. Let’s examine these for a moment.

If you’re the type of fan who is going to say sign Manny to 1-2 years I don’t see how you can look at Abreu’s defense as a reason to not sign him to a 1 year deal. He’s not Manny offensively, but he is still an extremely skilled offensive player, who would be perfect batting 2nd or 3rd in the Mets lineup.

The difference between the two is that Manny would give the Mets more personality, and a more explosive offense. Abreu would make the Mets a bit more bland, but would give them a more controlled offense. If you slot him 2 or 3, you can get a very similar lineup to the 1999 team, where you had speed at the top, high on base and average on 2, 3, the power at the 4, and the rbi man at #5. Abreu and Beltran are two of the league’s best at getting on base and taking pitches. They will not only shorten games for a starting pitchers, but more importantly they will extend innings. A pitcher will have a rough first inning if Reyes is on base, followed by Beltran & Abreu working the count, that he’s going to get pretty tired when the the power hitting Delgado and Wright are up.

Let’s be honest, abreu is better than Manny defensively. His big issue is he is bad going at the wall, but he will get to balls faster than Manny.

Is Abreu as clutch? No. Very few are as clutch as Manny, but i think Abreu’s “lack of clutchness” is overblown due to high expectations at his previous spot. If he came to the Mets we’d already know what to expect. Abreu is not a guy to lead a club offensively, but he will win games for you as a complementary piece.

Most importantly, unlike other potential option in the outfield, we KNOW he can handle NY. He has withstood the fire and criticism in Philly, and after a rough start with the Yankees looking back he had a pretty good stretch with them. He showed he can come back from a rough stretch, shrug off the boos, and get back on his own two feet. After the struggles in recent years for the Mets to ignore off-field distractions, having a guy like that is not something to sneeze at.

Besides, at the very least he’s better than the Platoon.

[Edit:] Jon Heyman of SI brought up this stat: Abreu, Pujolds, and Arod are the only players with 100 RBIs the last 6 seasons. That is consistent production in an area the Mets lacked last year. Also brought up the good point that he may not run into walls, but he does stay healthy. Ryan Church showed last year that sometimes it’s best in the long run NOT to put it all on the line every single play.

“Scott, we’d love to sign both your players, but we needed to buy a second gold plated Duke Snider statue for the rotunda. The one in my bedroom got damaged.”

"Lovey, have you seen my teddy?

In the great NY tradition of Oddlot, The Dollar Store, Price Club, and food stamps, Mr. & Mr.s Howell are resisting pulling the trigger on the final steps to put the Mets over the top this year.  Captain Omar might very well win out (or deceive them for their own good), but at the moment, cold feet pitter patter their way around the new Citi Field.

Who do we need…Derek Lowe or Olle Perez?   My answer… we are the NY Mets.    We have two spots open in the rotation and two young arms that might need a break this year.  We need pitching.  As a fan of a team in the #1 media market in the world… do I want to hear about getting outbid by the Reds for Perez after we sign Lowe?    These owners own an Armani suit and love getting stains all over it.

“A Mets official termed it unlikely that the team would sign more than one starter from the group that includes Lowe, Perez and Wolf.”

“The Mets, currently ranked second with a value of $824 million, will also get a new stadium that should push their value close to $1 billion before long. Citigroup (nyse: Cnews - people ), beleaguered by the housing market meltdown, is still planning to pay the Amazins $400 million over 20 years for the stadium’s naming rights.”

This is not including SNY

I need someone to explain to me what the problem is?  Why spend so much money to begin with when you’re not going to be aggressive with the final few pieces you need?

By the way…

can we please stop with the Fernando Tatis garbage?

Show Me the Money: Lowe v. Perez

perezlowe

So, it appears that conventional wisdom by the Mets is to land one of the two- Lowe or Perez. In fact, the Mets are negotiating with Lowe right now.

These two guys basically cancel themselves out in terms of hits per inning and potential salaries, and Perez certainly has an upside in terms of being younger. That being said, for a 2-3 year deal, I would place my money on Lowe for a few reasons. First, Lowe is steady, consistently pitching 200 innings. In this sense, he is much more reliable over the course of a 162 game season, while the same can’t be said for Ollie.  Second, I’ll take a ground ball pitcher, like Lowe, over a fly ball pitcher any day of the week. Ground balls turn into double plays more frequently than fly balls. Third, while Perez may be absolutely brilliant at times, ala El Sid, you never know when it is all going to fall apart. His games are much tougher to watch like Leiter during his last season plus – 3-2 count after 3-2 count (after being ahead 0-2).  Lowe is a big game pitcher that has put it all together, while Perez is too much of a gamble. Finally, I would love to see the impact that Lowe could have on Pelfrey and Maine. The Mets could use another lefty starter for Utley, Howard, Ibanez, but smart money is on Lowe.

“Knockaround Guys”

prattThis being my first blog (whew, just made it before the end of the tax year), I wanted to address a current Mets need. I hear the talk of Manny, Lowe, Ollie, O-dog, etc., but what THIS  team could use – are a few “knockaround guys”. This is a harristerm that my father always uses to describe, not necessarily a tough-guy, but someone that’s a blue collar take-no crap type of guy. The guy when you are merging into traffic, and he lets you go, you respond with a brief head nod (also, the guy that you should let merge in front of you, even if it’s at the last second).

mitchell

Given the Phillie bantering, after winning the DAMN World Series and complaining about the Mets “excessive” celebration, and their need to talk about the Mets over and over and over again- I believe we need a couple of “knockaround guys” to keep things in check next year. This would help this immensely talented team get over the hump, giving it the true swagger it needs. Guys like Todd Pratt, who was a gritty player that was so happy to win that he single-handedly changed a grand slam to a “well you know”. Lenny Harris, that literally scared Piazza. Finally, Kevin Mitchell, that made two guys on drugs petrified. Guys like these three might help the hypocritical Phillies keep their mouths shut. Who would you pick?

Buck doesn’t watch many Mets games

yikes

I'm not wearing any pants

Today I heard the always brilliant Buck Martinez talking about how the Florida Marlins rotation is better than not only the Mets, but also the scum Phillies.  It seems he got Josh Johnson’s baseball card and Johan’s mixed up.

The Mets could have a rotation of Superman, Spiderman (good curveball), Jesus, The Greatest American Hero & Babe Ruth and he’d still pick them for 3rd.

Thank God

This was just a really bad idea.

I’m glad management came to its senses and avoided putting this lazy multi-millionaire in the new Citi Field outfield.   It’s been very difficult for me to deal with management’s silent, but deadly stance against Manny Ramirez and it would be totally hypocritical in my eyes to bring in this overpaid slug over the best right handed slug-ger in baseball history.

I’ll go deeper into the lack of spending in relation to total profit and need to maximize revenue streams later on, but for now I want to thank Omar for coming down from his holiday bender and hanging up on the Dodgers.  Now, he needs to liquor up Thurston Howell and his son and have them wake up with Manny sleeping in their bathtub.

Welcome to Kiner’s Korner

Welcome to Kiner’s Korner.  This is a co-op style blog where several Met fans will analyze the day to day moves of NYC’s premiere baseball team, The Mets.  It’s our belief that the flagship franchise of the National league isn’t always projected in the best of light and our objective is to both celebrate the history and tradition of the Mets and also provide a check and balance system toward the current managers of the brand… Sterling Mets.

Enjoy, criticize and participate…
