Arrrrgggghhhhhh

I can't watch

What an embarrassing display of filthy baseball, antagonizing commercials and overall amateurish everything.

Let’s review today:

  • Yohan gets unraveled and throws a dugout temper tantrum
  • The team fields like the 62 Mets.
  • Every commercial is either for death, hopeless fast food junkies with mayo all over their face, musicals about the lotto or some shyster lawyer trying to leech off poor people’s misfortune.  It’s all an ideal bridge from one horrible inning to the next.

I’m utterly disgusted in every way.

Beltran needs Rest – will sit through All-Star Game says Specialist

Per Adam Rubin of the Daily News:

Carlos Beltran’s trip to Vail, Colo., provided a reassuring diagnosis, a source familiar with the examination told the Daily News.

and we can now exhale

and we can now exhale

Dr. Richard Steadman, who examined Beltran (pictured right) on Monday, agreed with the team medical staff’s assessment that the center fielder is suffering from a bone bruise. Steadman is expected to recommend Beltran remain inactive slightly longer than Mets doctor David Altchek initially suggested — until after the All-Star break. The doctors had yet to speak as of Tuesday morning, according to a source.

The Steadman Hawkins Clinic is where Alex Rodriguez had hip surgery. The group also has pioneered microfracture surgery on knees. But assistant GM John Ricco explicitly said Monday that Beltran’s choice for that location for a second opinion did not automatically mean he was a candidate for that surgical procedure.

While it stinks to be without him through at least the All-Star Break, at least it sounds like he should be ready for the majority of the 2nd half. A glimmer of hope has been allotted to the Mets Faithful.

Mets fall under .500 with 10-6 Loss to the Brewers

You know how you go on a roller coaster, and as it slowly reaches the top you prepare yourself for the plummet? But when you start going down you still scream your lungs out as the surprising lunge.

The Mets have plunged.

Fernando-Nieve-mania came to a screeching halt last night. He didn’t have command, nor his fastball. He allowed 11 hits and 3 runs in less than 4 innings. The Mets came back to 3-2 off Casey McGehee’s (doesn’t that sound like the name of a player off a non-MLB baseball game?) best Luis Castillo impression. Unlike Castillo, McGehee has enough power to rectify that by hitting a Grand Slam off Brian Stokes.

For those who may have forgotten, a Grand Slam is a home run hit with the bases loaded. I know many of you haven’t seen that in a while, so a refresher might be needed.

The Mets made the score closer than the game really was by scoring 4 runs in the ninth, which included David Wright getting a hit off his latest skid. The oddest batting leader ever. Gary Sheffield tacked on 2 runs with a two run bomb in the ninth. He became the first met to reach double digits in home runs this year. Yeah, I’m holding back tears too.

David Wright: Strangest. Batting Leader. Ever

David Wright: Strangest. Batting Leader. Ever

Brewers manager Ken Macha had enough, called in Trevor Hoffman, who got Brian Schnieder (who drove in the first 2 runs with a long double) to ground into a double play on one pitch.

Johan Santana will be asked to stop the bleeding tonight. The Mets also will be waiting with baited breath as Beltran gets a 2nd opinion on his injured knee by renowned surgeon Dr. Steadman, who is best known for pioneering and performing microfracture surgery. Microfracture surgery is the surgery that Allan Houston and Jason Kidd, among others, took on their knees, with mixed results. Mets claim he’s not expected to need the surgery, but with the Mets history of understating injuries to the public, being nervous is understandable.

Omar, Jerry, Fred, and Jeff's recurring Nightmare - and ours too

Omar, Jerry, Fred, and Jeff's recurring Nightmare - and ours too

Sigh. At this point, you gotta wonder if the Mets are better off not dealing for help, and consider being sellers at the deadline. Write off the season as injury-plagued and come back next season stronger, healthier, and better. May not be the popular action, but it could be the right one.

It’s still early for that though. Keep in mind Mets were about the same record a year ago, and did come back to within one game of a playoff spot. For now though, that scenario looks less and less likely.

HELP!

Lost Weekend at Citi

There’s not much to write about the last few days at Citi Field that’s not already been written. There is nothing that a Met fan would rather read less than a synopsis of 3 games in which the original Baltimore Orioles spanked our Mets like as if they were wearing lingerie and high heels.

ahhh... to be a mets fan

The combination of the Wilpons letting the players go off to slaughter in the WBC, the cracker jack training staff that tried to put Humpty Dumpty back together again and our fearless leader who’s given up on the roster has led us to where we are today.

A happy face sticker goes to Livan for holding the fort yesterday and to Fernando Martinez for bringing his glove this weekend. That’s about it.

I’m really put off by Jerry Manuel and I’ve gone from being a supporter of his to slowly wondering if a change is in order. The first sign of the times came when he called the Yankees the marquee franchise in NY a while back and little by little he’s showing a side of himself that I’m not comfortable with.

I believe he’s ruining Daniel Murphy and all this treading water crap has got me steaming with anger. I miss that guy from 1999 who managed to win with a 600lb Hawaiian in left field. What was his name again?

Sheff’s Back in Kitchen, Church is in Center & Reyes……Running?!?

Per our friend Adam Rubin of Daily News, YOUR new york Mets have announced the Gary Sheffield will be back in left field vs his old team, the Yankees. Ryan Church will man center field, with Tatis in right. It will be Church’s first appearance in center since 2007 with the Nationals.

Considering the Mets best ground ball pitcher, Mike Pelfrey, will be on the mound tonight going with a relatively weak defensive outfield makes a great deal of sense.

The lineup is as follows:

Castillo, 2b
Cora, ss
Wright, 3b
Sheffield, lf
Tatis, rf
Church, cf
Evans, 1b
Santos, c
Pelfrey, rhp

Keep your fingers crossed as Jose Reyes will be jogging at Citifield today to test his hamstring. Hopefully if there’s no setbacks it might mean a rehab assignment will start soon.

Yo’ Hand and the Mini Mets ride again!

This is not supposed to be happening, but maybe it’s perfectly logical and we’ve been conditioned to think otherwise. A team of injured superstars, led by an arrogant first baseman wilts like a dead flower and the weeds take over the garden. Suddenly the stadium is full, Mets fans are happy and the team is fighting. Whenever you see a team load up on big free agents in an off season, just sit and laugh to yourself.

On pace for 20... allllrrriiiiiiggggghhht

I’m not going to be delusional and claim I won’t be happy when Reyes, Maine & Putz come back, but I will say that I love watching winning simplified to it’s basic elements. This team is proving that you don’t win with your baseball card, you win by scoring more runs that the other side. If a double A team plays hard and smart, given the mentality of today’s overpriced major leaguers,. they’ll pull more games out than you think. Also, some people respond better given more responsibility.

Yesterday Johan had a shakey start and according to Metsblog went into the tunnel and corrected himself via computer. If that’s not done more often by pitchers… it should be.

Notes from yesterday and assorted other stuff

  • 3 of 4 against the Cards is a fantastic feat and the team deserves every turnstile click it gets. I’m going to make a point to head out to Citi as soon as the circus leaves town this weekend.
  • Fernando Martinez can catch the baseball
  • I love seeing Nick Evans revival (and his showcasing), but must we always bench Daniel Murphy?
  • Jerry said just two days ago he thought Murphy was starting to hit because he got regular playing time. Wow, ummm… Jerry should speak to the manager and see if he can convince him to play Murphy.

Johan has such smooth hands

Johan’s coco butter commercial is really gay and almost as nasty as Reyes’. Really, thinking the players have smooth hands makes me want to shut the game off and go chop some wood.

  • Damn… I’m starting not to hate Tim Redding. I think I need a pill or something for that. Did you know he is Joyce Randolph’s nephew (Trixie from the Honeymooners)??
  • Don fehr is retiring as head of the MLBPA. Ding dong the witch is dead! Hey Bud, there’s a rocking chair at the home for you too. Don’t let the door hit you on the way out

RIP Buddy

The Futures Game, Conan?

2 Mets Prospects have been added to the Futures Game on All-Star weekend, according to the Daily News’ Adam Rubin. Jenry Meija, the 19 year old pitching prospect in AA, and Wilmer Flores, a 17 year old shortstop (for now, he’s expected to grow too big for the position) in low Single-A Savannah will be representing the Mets during All-Star weekend.

Meija is the one to really keep an eye on, as he is dominating AA since being called up. He is small in height, but very strong and throws hard.

I would recommend checking out Toby Hydy’s MetsMinorLeagueBlog.com for more details on these kids. He and Adam Rubin are probably the best sources for Mets Minors happenings.

Revenge of the Fallen: Mets Transform Into Winners, Beat Cardinals 11-0

Transformers

Two things are very clear: 1) I need  a lesson in Photoshop, and 2) The Mets will not go down without a fight.

The Mets shocked and impressed, just one night after a 3-0 loss, with their own shut-out thanks to:

Damn-good Pitching

Fernando Nieve made a strong case for himself after pitching 6 scoreless innings and allowing only 3 hits. Now 3-0, it’s hard to imagine that he’ll be going anywhere once Ollie and Maine return. Most likely, we’ll see Perez working the pen while Nieve sticks around for at least a few more well-deserved starts.

Bad-ass Offense

Nick Evans decided to show off during his first start of the season by hitting a 2-run rocket to left in the 4th.

David Wright had 4 hits, scored 3 runs and had one stolen base.

2 RBIs for Church on 3 hits, 3 for Tatis on 2 hits.

I could keep going, but you get the picture. Everyone did their part last night – Reed, Nieve, Schneider, A. Reyes…Guys were hitting. As a team!

Personally, I don’t like shut-outs. Sure they make you proud, but tight games are more exciting and give you better bragging rights in the end.

However, last night was something special. The “Little Team That Could” from Flushing, NY proved to the world (ok, at least the NL) that they are not going down just yet. Win or lose, there is still some fight left in this team.

Philadelphia lost last night, moving the Mets 1.5 games out of first place. Tonight, the Mets’ other ace, Johan Santana, takes the mound and tries to win the first series for the Mets since the June 5-7 Nationals series.

I think I can, I think I can, I think I can....

I think I can, I think I can, I think I can....

Injury Update: Maine, Reyes

Adam Rubin of the Daily News reports that while Reyes was visibly shaken up by the car accident yesterday (with trainer Ray Ramirez) he suffered no ill effects. As for his hamstring, Reyes will take batting practice and fielding drills, but is still not ready for full running. He’s currently jogging and walking on a treadmill in a pool. No word on the timetable for his return.

Maine is going to get one more rehab start till he comes back. Maine and Perez will be at Citifield tomorrow for a bullpen session in front of Dan Warthen.

Should be interesting to see how Neive and Redding do in their next turn before Maine comes back. Last chance guys, be impressive.

Jon Heyman: Mets won’t Mortgage Future

Per Jon Heyman on Twitter, a Mets official says they won’t mortgage the future for a fix in the offense. Heyman feels that means F-mart, Holt and Meija.

In this blogger’s opinion, that probably keeps Holiday off the Mets, but Jermaine Dye, Aubrey Huff, Mark Derosa and Adam Dunn probably can be had without giving up one of those three. In Dye’s case, problem only if Mets take on the entire 11m+ salary.

Of the three aside from Dye, I’d prefer Derosa or Huff, for the flexibility in their positions and I feel they’d fit the offense more than Dunn. I know many fans love the fact that Dunn can hit home runs out of any field, including Citi, and he does walk, but in a park like Citifield defense and pitching is paramount. Dunn is a butcher in the field and is liable to cost as many runs as produce.

I like Huff and Derosa as well cause they both have power, but can still hit for high enough average not to rely on it, and have doubles power. Neither are gold glovers, but they aren’t liabilities either.

If Dunn were to be acquired I wouldn’t be upset, but I can picture him being a bust in NY far more easily than other options.

NY Daily News’ Adam Rubin on Minors Moves

NY Daily News beat writer Adam Rubin was good enough to answer my questions regarding last night’s release of veteran minor leaguers Wily Mo Pena, Connor Robertson, Bobby Keilty, and Javier Valentin.

Robert Z: The Mets yesterday made a flurry of moves, but lost in them were the release of Bobby Keilty, Wily Mo Pena, Javier Valentin, and Connor Robertson. Why yesterday? Was it coincidence with all the roster moves? Was there a contract trigger on these former MLB’ers? Or is Omar trying to free up a bit of cash?

Adam Rubin: I don’t know the precise answer, but I think they just acquired and acquired and acquired guys and ran out of room. For instance, I haven’t looked into it, but doesn’t Ryan Coultas to Kingsport a few days ago just have to be a paper move until they could free up room? He was doing fine.

Robert Z: You mean you think they just ran out of roster space in the minors?

Adam Rubin: Pretty much is my interpretation.

Mets score 6 without Beltran, Win 6-4 (6/22/09)

amd_stokes

Who would have thought that a lineup with Fernando Tatis batting cleanup would have scored 6 runs? Add on the fact that Wright had 0 RBI’s and it’s very hard to believe we scored at all. But not only did the Mets score, they took the first game against a good Cardinals team under a good pitching performance by Tim Redding and clutch hits from Alex Cora and Omir Santos. Daniel Murphy also hit his 5th HR of the year and the bullpen was solid with Brian Stokes getting the great Albert Pujols to hit into a DP and K Rod closing it out with a 1-2-3 9th inning.

It was great to see this lineup score 6 runs tonight without Wright knocking in a run. If we can get good pitching like we did tonight from Redding, I see no reason why this team cannot stay afloat until we get some players back. We aren’t going to outslug anyone but with good pitching and defense we should at least be able to stay above .500. The bullpen also got a much needed rest as Feliciano, Green, and Parnell all got the night off and Jerry decided that using some guy named Brian Stokes might be a good idea. Turned out he was right as he got Pujols to hit into a huge double play that might have been the biggest play of the game. In small news the Mets DFA’ed yet another player as they let go of Conner Robertson, the player they got in the Scott Schoenweiss deal.

Tomorrow the Mets take on the Cardinals again as Livan Hernandez goes up against Joel Piniero at 7:10.

Breaking News: Beltran on DL

Per Adam Rubin of the NY Daily News, Carlos Beltran has been placed on the DL, and Fernando Martinez has been called back up. The Mets also demoted Ken Takahashi (the major’s only lefthanded reliver who can only get righties out) and brought up lefty Pat Misch.

We’ll let you know as soon as we get word how long Beltran will be out. It’s going to be a LOOOOOOONNNNNG 15 days at least.

David Wright, good luck to ya. You’re pretty much on your own.

UPDATE: Wilson Valdez has been designated for assignment, and elmer dessens has been called up. Minaya says Beltran has a bone bruise, but he doesn’t expect him to miss more than the 2 weeks (so we can expect him in August, I guess. Hey Omar, if the injury reports keep changing, that forces me to be skeptical of all diagnoses.)

Essentially, the Mets brought up F-mart to help replace Beltran, and called up Misch and Dessens to try to freshen the pen.

Omar also annouced the Mets new theme song:

Pelfrey, Parnell, & Rain can’t stop Rays; Mets lose 10-6

Isn’t it just like the Mets? When they go on a slide they lose one game by not hitting enough, they lose the next by not pitching well enough.

On a day where one of the Mets not named Beltran, Wright, or Sheffield goes yard, the Mets pitchers can’t stop the bleeding vs the Rays. The Mets lose their third consecutive series, and third consecutive rubber game of a series. The Mets are now 2-8 in rubber games.

Mike Pelfrey looked dominant for 4 innings, but once again hit the wall in the 5th. He gave up 4 runs on 5 hits in that inning. He also was saved by his teammate and his opponents. The Rays, for some unthinkable reason, decided that they should bunt Carlos Pena, one of the AL’s leading home run hitters, when Pelfrey was wild. There are times to play small ball, and that wasn’t it. Maybe John Madden wanted to get the inning over quick so he can take some BOOM! Tough Actin’ Tinactin for his itchy foot. (Huh? His name is Joe Madden? Really? Could’ve sworn it was John.)

So to score a Touchdown you gotta go down the field and get from one end of the field to the other end of the field and when Brett Favre throws a Bomb to the Wide Reciever into the Endzone BOOM! that's a Touchdown

So to score a Touchdown you gotta go down the field and get from one end of the field to the other end of the field and when Brett Favre throws a Bomb to the Wide Reciever into the Endzone BOOM! that's a Touchdown

Brian Schneider also helped Pelf by throwing out Carl Crawford stealing third. I’m so amazed by that I’m going to repeat it. Brian Schneider threw out Carl “Possibly Faster than Jose Reyes without the Hamstring Problems” Crawford stealing third with one out.

By the way, for those who think only the Mets make stupid plays on the basepaths, consider the above Exhibit A. With a struggling pitcher on the mound and the heart of the lineup still at bat YOU DON’T MAKE AN OUT AT THIRD. It didn’t hurt the Rays in the end, but those two plays could have.

Brian Schneider had a whale of a game. He hit a monster 3 run home run off the Pepsi Porch to give the Mets a 5-4 lead. (Yes, THAT Brian Schneider. No, I don’t think he took PEDs before the game. No, I don’t think the bat was corked. No, he didn’t get a sign from the runners. Look, he just hit a mistake pitch. If Rey Ordonez can homer, anyone can.)

Then (sigh) Parnell came in. Tell me if you heard this one before lately: Parnell came in, didn’t retire a batter, gave up 4 runs during a long 7th inning that was interrupted by the 2nd rain delay in Citifield in as many days. (Keith moaned, Gary Cohen was overjoyed.)

By the way, I know praising a reliever who lets an inherited runner to score is not done, but I gotta give props to Takahashi for keeping the Mets in it. With two runners on and nobody out, Takahashi allowed only one of Parnell’s inherited runners to score. That was also in large part to Carlos Beltran, who made a great run and slide catch in center field after the rain delay to keep the Mets close at 8-5.

The Mets tried to bounce back in the bottom of the inning, but the lack of depth and power in the lineup did them in again. Cora singled, Murphy grounded into a fielder’s choice, Beltran and Wright singled. Sheffield then grounded into a fielder’s choice scoring Murphy, but Church struck out with 2 men on base.

The Rays would then tack on two runs off Green and Feliciano, and the Mets bats were held in check by Balfour and Howell. Rays win.

If you’re a glass half-full person, you can take solace in the fact that the Phillies are struggling even more than the Mets, losing sixth straight and getting swept by the Orioles. The Phillies are struggling to win at home, and that bears watching.

However, one cannot be criticized by being frustrated that the Mets have been unable to take advantage of the Phillies malaise, and are just, to quote Jerry Manuel the last few days, “hanging in there and staying above .500 until the calvary arrives.”

——–

A few quick notes and thoughts:

1) A big difference between Jerry Manuel and Willie Randolph is that Jerry is far more ready to own up to mistakes. He may not do anything to change them, but at least he doesn’t try to give off an air of infallibility. During the post-game, he took responsibility for Parnell’s struggles, and says he’s overworked him and several other members of the pen (you think he means Pedro Feliciano?). He says Parnell will probably get three days off.

I’d like to Brian Stokes, who pitched an inning of scoreless relief today, an opportunity for some late game duty. You can argue he was one of the few bright spots in the pen last September, and I see little reason why he shouldn’t get another chance to be a difference maker in this pen. You do wonder if the Mets may be forced to look for an arm if Parnell, Green or Stokes cannot step up in that 8th inning role until Wagner and/or Putz returns.

Is Omar going to have build a new Bridge to K-ROD?

Is Omar going to have build a new Bridge to K-ROD?

2) Manuel mentioned during the post game that Maine could be back Saturday vs the Yankees. He also said he wants to keep Nieve in the rotation since he’s hot right now, so Redding will be moved to the Pen apparently. Look for Jon Switzer to be sent back down.

3) Manuel also mentioned he may use Perez as a reliever when he comes back. I’m choosing to ignore this. Manuel made this claim once before earlier in the year. It didn’t make sense then, it still doesn’t now. Perez is too inconsistent to be asked to come in from the pen, and there’s no way Omar is or should let his $12m investment go to the pen.

Count me among those who hasn’t given up on Perez. As a Met he’s been inconsistent, but he has never been as bad as he was the first few weeks. I do believe there was trouble with the knee. One may think that’s naiive, but the velocity was down, and it’s now back up. His setback kept getting pushed back because of it. I just don’t see much reason to believe it was a complete farce.

If the Mets want to be real players in October, they need Perez to pitch like Perez of the last few years, a 15 game winner. A guy who will give you a great game, 2 ok games, and a crummy one every 4 games. I am not looking at what the Mets and everyone HOPE he will be. He’s not going to be the ace everyone thought he’d be in Pittsburgh and when he was hot last year. But he can be a very good #3 starter. Maybe a #2.

Can Fernando Nieve or Tim Redding? Maybe. Possibly for Nieve. But my money goes on Perez. I’d give him the benefit of the doubt based on his long term Mets history, not what happened in April.

4) For those fans who want to always see the kids come up, thinking that’ll make the club more exciting and better, Mike Pelfrey is why I preach caution. I love Pelf, and I think he’s going to be a solid MLB pitcher. But he’s in the midst of a learning curve. He’s got to learn how to get out of innings when he’s behind the count, and he’s got to learn how to pitch through the 5th. We know he can do it, he knows he can do it, cause he’s done it. But this is what young pitchers go through, these stretches where they have to re-learn how to pitch through adversity.

Unfortunately, he’s got to do it in a year the Mets desperately need to get to the postseason. So he’s gotta develop quick. The Mets need Big Pelf to come up Big. It’s not going to get easier with the Yanks up next Friday.

Go Big Pelf - Past the 5th Inning

Go Big Pelf - Past the 5th Inning

5) Last One, no foolin’.

The Mets may have scored 6 runs today, but they can’t expect 3 run homers from Schneider. I am not one of those who is going to call for Omar’s head for not having a new big bat in uniform by gametime tomorrow. The Mets unfortunately got the injuries at a time when most teams aren’t selling and aren’t making deals. The Nate McClouth trade is an exception, not a rule this time of year. But unless Johan gets hurt, Omar needs to get somebody by the deadline, and preferably before the All-star break.

Reyes may come back soon, but a hamstring is not something that heals easily. He’s going to have to be very careful with it, and there is a good possibility that it will be reinjured. It is the nature of the injury. And while Delgado’s injury is not exactly like A-rod’s, and they’re not the same type of hitter, who is to say Delgado won’t go through a slump like the Yankees Sultan of Steroids? Granted, he went through Spring Training and A-roid didn’t, and they’re not the same hitter, but it’d be foolish to expect greatness. You have to expect something in between.

Omar’s got his work cut out for him. You gotta pray Beltran’s MRI comes back negative tomorrow. If he goes down, Omar will be forced to make a move, and a GM who is forced usually makes a bad one.

Happy Father’s Day Everyone. Tomorrow Mets face the classic rivals, St Louis. Albert Pujols is coming to town. Oh…………crap.

Gangsta Navigates Mets to a 5-3 Win Against the Rays (6/19/09)

ganstaIn case you had to TIVO/DVR the game, here it is in a nutshell. Nieve pitched six strong, Schneider hit all of his homeruns (in feet) in one swing, and Jerry navigated the pen to set up Frankie. Sprinkle three hits from Murphy, a clutch one-batter appearance from Feliciano, and a two-out tack on run by Church and you can erase the game from your cable box to free up for today’s game or a week’s worth of Ellen. BTW, I have never DVR(ed) a baseball game.

I have to admit, and hope others do too, that I was perplexed with Jerry’s maneuvering of the bullpen, especially Feliciano. While it was unfolding, I thought he was out of his mind, or he got caught with his pants down. If I was managing, as we all tend to do during games, I might have lost this game for the Mets! Maybe we should start a Gene-Meter – all the games we would have lost with me managing.

The top of the 7th is what I am referring to. Parnell almost pitched out of the inning, possibly too excited over striking out Met-killer Burrell. Jerry brings in Feliciano to face Carl Crawford, which is the right move. I’m good up until I DON’T see someone coming in with Pedro as part of a double switch (the pitcher is leading off the bottom of the 7th). I would have brought in Evans or Reed in place of Church, so we can have Pedro pitch against the three lefties that were hitting for the Rays in the 8th. Pedro gets out of the inning, but I am wondering who is going to pitch the next inning for the Mets. Jerry duped me and put in Green who did manage to strike out the side. Not only that but Church, who I had on the bench as part of my brilliant double swith, hit a two out single to provide the Mets with an insurance run. Jerry claims to have a “feel” for the game (and situations) and he either showed it last night, or got lucky. Either way Gangsta, I was wrong.

Breaking News: Nick Evans promoted to Mets

According to Adam Rubin of NY Daily News, Nick Evans has been promoted to the Mets after finding his swing the last 3 weeks at AA Binghampton. Evans has hit safely in 11 of his last 13 and is hitting .377 (20-53) over that run with seven doubles, a triple, and two homers for a .660 slugging percentage.

No word yet on who will be sent down. My guess is Fernando Martinez with Gary Sheffield back in the outfield. KinersKorner will keep you posted.

K-Rod Leads Mets to Loss, 5-4 (6/18/2009)

Is there anything worse than walking in the tying run in the bottom of the 9th? Aside from a dropped pop-up, probably not. Another strong outing from Livan Hernandez (7IP and 2 runs) was wasted by none other than K-Rod, who walked in the tying run and then gave up a single to Aubry Huff to end the game.

This one's all you, boy

This one's all you, boy

Frankie Says Relax
While last Saturday’s save was blown thanks to the drop hear ’round the world by Luis Castillo (who, I should mention, did his part by making a spectacular diving stop in the 8th, temporarily holding off the O’s), last night’s was all Frankie. Rodriguez was upset at his performance, but chalked up his second blown save in a week to being “… a human being. Unfortunately, days like this are going to happen.” Disappointing as it was, I can understand. But let’s hope he doesn’t stay human for too long. K-Rod just couldn’t throw a strike to save his life last night- he was looking more like Frankie Muniz than the Frankie Rodriguez we know.

I'm the single season saves leader, grrrrr!

I'm the single season saves leader, grrrrr!

Huff and Puff and Blow the Mets Down
Aubrey Huff stole not one, but two wins from the Mets the past two nights. Wednesday’s 2-run homer in the 7th was the difference in the game, and last night’s single in the 9th drove in the winning run. The Mets have supposedly been eying the first baseman, and based on the past two nights alone, I say go for it. At the very least, we know he’s clutch. And, news brief – the Mets can use some “clutch”.

The Mets have only won 1 of their last 5 series, and that was to the abysmal Washington Nationals. Let’s hope this is not a sign of things to come….the Metsies start a home stand tonight against the Rays, followed by the Cardinals and Yankees. And it’s anyone’s guess as to what we can expect.

Small Ball is Frustrating: Mets Lose 6-4 to Orioles (6/17/09)

punchjudy
I hate all the losses! The Mets hung around and fought back but just didn’t have enough to withstand the Orioles. What sucks is watching other teams hit homeruns. The Mets get enough guys on base, but need too many hits to get them in. Last week versus the Phillies, I watched them get three singles with the bases loaded, managing only three runs – one per hit. That is tough to do. A home run every now and then, more now over then, would do this team good. Omar, it’s Gene – get us an outfield stick.

I worry about the impact of this on guys like Wright and Beltran. You can see them trying to overdo it at times. At two seperate points Beltran swung at the first pitch in a key spot – relax Carlos, relax. Wright was no better. In fact, both did it in the 9th with the Sheff on base and down two runs. In five plate appearances each, Beltran and Wright saw a total of 9 and 15 pitches respectively. That’s not good. At this point the team is hanging in there but looks like a bunch of punch and Judys!!
