ENOUGH IS ENOUGH, IT’S TIME TO GRAB AN IDENTITY

wright9It was nice to see the Mets “walk off” today, beating the Giants 3-2. It’s cool being the spoiler and playing loose, as we saw way too much of this from other teams the last two seasons. I have to admit though it is tough to get overly excited as the “face” of the franchise was knocked on his ass yesterday. The news wasn’t much better today….Even though it was not intentional, per the Giants, this is the second time in the last couple of weeks that David was flipped. This team has no identity. They have, when healthy, a contending team, but it seems like the rest of baseball sees the Mets as a soft team- NOT GOOD. It makes me think – what would the ’86 Mets do in that situation? mets_fight

Regardless of whom puts on a uniform for the Mets this year, at some point they need to grab an identity. By that I mean – show the rest of the league that they are not going to take any more shit. In baseball circles this is usually accomplished by a good old fashion basebrawl. This is more than hitting one of our guys, it’s about diving over the plate and talking publicly about the Mets (didn’t Cone do the same thing with the Dodgers and it somehow propelled them to beat the Mets?). Jerry claimed to be a gangster, but it doesn’t seem like any Sugar_Hill_Ganggang that I have heard of – maybe he’s a member of the the Sugar Hill Gang!!!

Regarding DWright, I love the guy, he plays hard and he is a gamer. That said, I have had enough with his friendly attitude, patting every MLB player on the ass when they come to third. Why doesn’t anyone pat the Mets on the ass when they get to third? Do the Braves or Phillies do that? I don’t think so. David- it’s not your job to be the embassador for the game, especially since no one is crying for the Mets this year (or any of the last three years). The one young guy that might help in this area is Frenchy – I like this S.O.B. – I hated him and his horse teeth when he was a Brave, but I was wrong about him. I can see him knocking someone on their ass (and driving in 100 runs with a full lineup). H e was genuinely excited to score the game winning run today, and for that reason alone people should continue to go to Citi!

CONGRATS HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES: SPEAKING OF WHICH, MEX YOU ARE KILLING ME!!!!

keith1Congrats to two guys that I actually have met for an autograph as a kid – Jim Rice and Rickey Henderson for making the Hall of Fame. Both these men were great players, different yet the same in many ways. Henderson was a first ballot, while Rice (because he didn’t kiss the ass of the writers) had to wait a while. Speaking of borderline HOF’s I have to post this – Keith Hernandez, like Tom Seaver, is ruining his image as a ballplayer for me as I listen to him announce. Enough is enough he is, hands down, the biggest egomaniac the announcing world has ever seen.

I can handle his “level swing” approach to hitting a baseball that is coheneasily becoming a college drinking game. He also has his mexisms (see http://brooklynmetfan.com/) because he f**ks up more than Hogan’s Goat (if you know what this means, I applaud you). That said, he talks down to the listeners and has managed to bring down the game of Gary (one of the better announcers around) in the process. Keith has many of the attributes of Tom Seaver, which cracks me up. Both guys were great players, but forget that announcing is a craft itself, little of which has to do with ever playing the game (some of the better astronomers have never gone into space). Keith continues to remind us that he played baseball, which is a total pain in the ass. I listened to Kiner as a kid and barely knew that he played, let alone that he was one of the greatest hitters of all time. Listen to Mex for 12 seconds and you know ALL of what he did. If you watch Seaver in the booth, watch closely as he will ignore Cohen, whose domain it really IS, while only looking at Darling and Hernandez, yet when they need help regarding a stat (or how to score a damn play), they lean on Cohen. Just once I would love to hear a guy like Gary say “you played thousands of game, you tell me”!

I listened to Hernandez today, in a condescending voice (you know, grace_hofthe “boys and girls” talk that he does, even though New York fans are among the most knowledgeable) tell us all not to do things like steroids that are against the law, yet hambone did coke and snitched on Stargell et al. in the 1980s (why leave out that detail). He also talked about never quitting on a game, yet he was drinking beer and making travel plans in the 6th game of the ’86 series while his team was battling their asses off on the field in perhaps the greatest comeback in world series history. This bitterness that I have, and I apologize as a Mets’ fan for this, makes me happy (in a perverted way) that he is not in the HOF or the all defense team- he would be friggin’ unbearable if so. Keith, my boy (and I mean boy) take a page from the Mark Grace book, you can listen to him (and enjoy the game, even as a visitor), never even knowing if he played MLB baseball, let alone had the most hits in the 1990s- a guy that idolized you.

Omar Sat and Waited & Now it’s Too Late

omarAs I sit here and watch back ups for the back ups it’s just starting to sink in that this season is a wash. The sadness is quickly switched to anger as I think that Omar (who still could get dumped over this and Tony B issues) should have pulled the trigger on a move for offensive help. On July 3rd the Mets were two games under .500, but only 3 games out. That false sense of security spelled doom for our team, and as I retrospectively look at things I tend to blame Omar for not doing “something”. The Phillies got hot, the Mets dipped and the rest is history. This same sense of security may bite the Phils in the ass if they don’t move for a starter since they have enough to win the east, but not enough to advance in the playoffs. But then again what the hell do I know, I thought from day one that the Ibanez move was crazy!

METS PUMMELED IN ATL 11-0 on WALDO’s NIGHT and I’M BITTER (7/17/09)

maddorkNot for nothing, but enough is enough. I understand that Reyes dances and the Phillies piss themselves over it, but how many clubs have to take shots at the Mets before they just snap. As a fan, I am at that point. First, Hamels calls the Mets out as “chokers” and now of all people Greg Maddux – “Let’s beat the Mets tonight like the good old days” takes a swing at the Mets? Maddux couldn’t beat up my four year old niece, and he is talking shit? It’s funny, the Mets talked about the Dodgers in 1988 and that inspired them to kick the crap out of the Mets in the playoffs, yet the NL, for the last three years, has said way worse about the Mets and they just take it. Someone needs to get drilled in the neck – sorry, I’m just bitter at this point. I see the writing on the wall. As a fan I have never really rubbed it in the face of opponents, but I am reconsidering this position as I see the way that others have treated me.

So, let me get this straight, the Braves retire Waldo’s number (after the Cubs), while he gets his 300th win elsewhere. Glavine was also a mainstay, and he too had his 300th win somewhere else, only to be punked later by the Braves at the expense of Hansen. Smoltz, the trifecta, gets ignored at the end of his career, yet the Braves are a model organization that all these fools run back to? Hey Chipper, you are next bro! jones

bitterpillRegarding Omar and Jerry- fans are talking change, are you out of your minds? It’s not on them that 40 percent of the team is on the DL- I credit Omar for not hitting the Phillips’ panic button and trading away our chips. As I see it, and it is late enough to proclaim this, the season is over. Play it out, try to keep Wright healthy and move on. Beltran is not coming back anytime soon, Reyes is up in the air, and Delgado is middle August (at best). Deal with it folks, just one more thing we have to consider in the years to come, besides not holding a lead – will most of our guys be hurt (add Sheff to the list). BTW, as I have preached all season, we can thank the WBC for this!!!!!

Welcome to NY Frenchy, Pick a Number, and Bring McCann with You!!

\The Mets continued to slide tonight against the Reds, falling 3-0, never even posing an offensive threat at all. The Reds hit two HR’s and Wright threw away a ball on an easy out at home, while the Mets grounded out. Simple as that, a two sentence summary of nine innings of major league baseball – unbelievable.

mccannThe primary story of tonight is that the Mets made a move – Church for Francoeur. Church never really took to NY, despite my prior posts that he was a double-machine, while Jeff Francoeur simply wore out his welcome in Atlanta. Francoeur was benched by Bobby Cox and ultimately sent to Atlanta purgatory – New York. While I hated Jeff and his “horse-toothed” smile when he pummeled my team, I have to welcome him to the Mets. He is a very good outfielder and has pop when he isn’t striking out. Hopefully HoJo will ditch the crouch and let the kid fly. This guy did drive in 100 runs twice, something that Church never came close to. I like that Frenchy is five years younger than Church and, despite what Neyer from ESPN (who doesn’t know sh*t) writes, think this will work out well for the Mets.

My real concern is how Jeff will adapt to NY. He is a Georgia kid one hundred percent, but his football mentality is encouraging as this will certainly present him with a challenge. Hopefully he is quick out of the gate, and the fans embrace him (and his smile). What I really hope for frencyis that Jeff relays to Brian McCann how cool NY is, luring him to the Mets! I’m sure that Wright will take him under his wing.

numberI am wondering what number he’ll wear, since 7 is kind of taken (by Reyes). I thought he might take 10 to honor Chipper, but Gary has that one. Number 16 would be cool to remember McCann, but Pagan has that one. Here is my guess – 12, his football number, giving him that edge that he’ll need for life in New York. Give ‘em hell Jeff, I can’t believe this, but I am rooting for you kid.

The secondary story of the night is that my sister realized, despite the fact that I write for a living, that I can, in fact, write. She finally read the blog! Welcome aboard Cookie!!!

Mets Swept, but at Least they are Sending Four to St. Louis (not really)

The Mets were pummeled this weekend, the one thing that really couldn’t happen. The Mets weren’t really “in” any of the games, the defense sucked, and the results were bad. If you are a fantasy fan, the Mets are sending David Wright, Carlos Beltran, Frankie Rodriguez, and Johan to St. Louis for the All-Star game.

wrightSpeaking of which, here is my one request. David, if you would like to atone for your 0-11 in Philly, and the double play with the bases drunk today, you’ll decline the all-star game to rest. I know Vitamin Water and the rest of the baseball fraternity (that you pat on the ass everytime they come to third base even though most try and bury your shortstop figuratively or literally on double plays) would blackball you, but do it for the good of the Mets, the real team you play for (not WBC U.S.A ).

Omar, it’s time to either make a move or conceed the season. Waiting for Reyes and Delgado might be unrealistic at this point since they have yet to perform baseball activities. Other teams put a guy on the DL for 15 days, and guess what, they are back in 15 days. Why doesn’t that happen for the Mets?

Finally, Philly fans – enjoy this weekend because you have yet to show the rest of the NL East that deserve 1st place. The Mets don’t deserve it, but don’t run around like you are dominating the NL – you were just swept by the Braves – Karma is a bitch remember that.

Hey MLB the Hats are Stupid!!

hatsNot for nothing, but does MLB merchandising have to try and capitalize on every friggin’ opportunity to make a dollar. I am a red-blooded American, but do we have to be pimped for every holiday possible? On a weekend where the Mets are pimpplaying the NL East rival Phillies, the last thing I want to see is a Mets player in a red hat. I’m sure the “corporate” bloggers of the world absolutely love the idea, but the small guys of the world, like myself, absolutely hate it. While we still have a voice, we will use it – It is stupid! Give me a break. It’s bad enough that we barely get to see our guys in the traditional blue caps, now I have to see green hats on St. Patrick’s Day, red hats for 4th of July weekend (instead of just the one day) – enough is enough.

Speaking of red – the Mets were shelled tonight 7-2. Livan stunk, the bullpen did not. The Mets hit, but not at the right time. It’s only one game – I mean that. Funny, the Phillies don’t play this solid against no other team, this year, but bring it up a level against the Mets. Utley is hitting 30 points below Wright, but you couldn’t convince me of that. It would have been nice to have Ollie for this series, but then again you never know which Perez would have shown up. Good to see the Mets not lie down like dogs. Interesting that Madsen was sent in with a 5 run lead after getting punked against the Braves last night. Finally, glad that Jerry did not save Frankie for this game!!

Striking a Balance Between Being a “Gamer” & Hurting the Team

The Mets have had a bevy of injuries this year, more than I ever remember on a Met team or any team (not in St. Louis). What’s frustrating for me is how these injuries extend beyond the 15-day disabled list, or even worse, burgeon into more serious problems. Part of me wants to blame the trainers, but there is also a great deal of responsibility that falls on the player.

This is an issue for me, especially today as Cerrone on Metsblog reports that Putz is able to extend his elbow FOR THE FIRST TIME IN A YEAR. Are you kidding me? If a pitcher can’t extend his elbow, his livelihood, then why is he not talking to someone about it? Moreover, why in hell is he playing in the WBC? When a player pushes it and is forced to stay off the team for an extended period of time – that simply hurts the team.

The same case could be made for Delgado. You can’t tell me that the hip wasn’t a problem in the offseason, yet he plays in the WBC (at full speed) resulting in losing at least three quarters of the Mets season. The same case could be made for Reyes, Perez, and Beltran. It’s not just the WBC participation, but how they handle their injuries during the season.

I understand the competitive nature of athletes in general and especially for baseball players. I have argued in the past that the ego of a baseball player is, and has to be, bigger than any other athlete from any other sport. Baseball is perhaps the only game, where there is a defense (so no golf analogies please), where every player is required to be center stage as a hitter (or as a pitcher) with all eyes on them. Football, soccer, basketball etc. can’t make the same claim. In baseball you have your moment, usually three or four times a game, whether you like it or not. If you are lucky enough to be a pitcher (haha) you get to control the tempo of the entire game (as a defender). Sometimes your ego is so big you actually have to bullshit yourself into thinking you are better than the other player, when you know at times that you aren’t. This same ego might make a player ignore all the warnings about early full-throttle WBC baseball, refusing to let people know you tweaked something, or refusing to go three-quarter speed (which isn’t all that advisable).

In the end though, the player actually hurts his team more if he is out for an extended period of time, even if he has the right intentions. I worry about the Mets because I am not convinced that the full team will come back healthy this year. Regardless of if it’s too late, I just don’t see the full squad taking Citifield and that sucks!

Gangsta Navigates Mets to a 5-3 Win Against the Rays (6/19/09)

ganstaIn case you had to TIVO/DVR the game, here it is in a nutshell. Nieve pitched six strong, Schneider hit all of his homeruns (in feet) in one swing, and Jerry navigated the pen to set up Frankie. Sprinkle three hits from Murphy, a clutch one-batter appearance from Feliciano, and a two-out tack on run by Church and you can erase the game from your cable box to free up for today’s game or a week’s worth of Ellen. BTW, I have never DVR(ed) a baseball game.

I have to admit, and hope others do too, that I was perplexed with Jerry’s maneuvering of the bullpen, especially Feliciano. While it was unfolding, I thought he was out of his mind, or he got caught with his pants down. If I was managing, as we all tend to do during games, I might have lost this game for the Mets! Maybe we should start a Gene-Meter – all the games we would have lost with me managing.

The top of the 7th is what I am referring to. Parnell almost pitched out of the inning, possibly too excited over striking out Met-killer Burrell. Jerry brings in Feliciano to face Carl Crawford, which is the right move. I’m good up until I DON’T see someone coming in with Pedro as part of a double switch (the pitcher is leading off the bottom of the 7th). I would have brought in Evans or Reed in place of Church, so we can have Pedro pitch against the three lefties that were hitting for the Rays in the 8th. Pedro gets out of the inning, but I am wondering who is going to pitch the next inning for the Mets. Jerry duped me and put in Green who did manage to strike out the side. Not only that but Church, who I had on the bench as part of my brilliant double swith, hit a two out single to provide the Mets with an insurance run. Jerry claims to have a “feel” for the game (and situations) and he either showed it last night, or got lucky. Either way Gangsta, I was wrong.

Small Ball is Frustrating: Mets Lose 6-4 to Orioles (6/17/09)

punchjudy
I hate all the losses! The Mets hung around and fought back but just didn’t have enough to withstand the Orioles. What sucks is watching other teams hit homeruns. The Mets get enough guys on base, but need too many hits to get them in. Last week versus the Phillies, I watched them get three singles with the bases loaded, managing only three runs – one per hit. That is tough to do. A home run every now and then, more now over then, would do this team good. Omar, it’s Gene – get us an outfield stick.

I worry about the impact of this on guys like Wright and Beltran. You can see them trying to overdo it at times. At two seperate points Beltran swung at the first pitch in a key spot – relax Carlos, relax. Wright was no better. In fact, both did it in the 9th with the Sheff on base and down two runs. In five plate appearances each, Beltran and Wright saw a total of 9 and 15 pitches respectively. That’s not good. At this point the team is hanging in there but looks like a bunch of punch and Judys!!

Pelf & Mets Roll O’s 6-4 (6/16/09)

First off, good to see Mike Pelfrey pitch strong, mixing up pitches and getting ahead of hitters. The Mets took advantage of a dropped ball, not the Castillo kind but still a drop, to seal the deal against the Orioles. The Mets also took advantage of a botched double play to put up four runs in the fourth. K-Rod came in, made it slightly interesting, and slammed the door. Man, that is one smooth cat.

palmerIt’s funny to hear other team’s impressions of the Mets. I had the Orioles feed last night and Palmer and Thorn recognized the injuries on the team, but gave glowing reviews of Wright, Beltran, and Sheffield. Almost to the point of saying that the Mets could win with just those guys. On our side, we tend to focus on what we don’t have over what we do have. Shame on me but I was waterunaware that the Mets have the highest batting average, as a team, in the NL. All I can say is that I hope we can keep our head above water until Reyes and Delgado come back.

If the news about Wags is correct, that would also be huge. I still musclebelieve that the Mets need a thumper they have to work too damn hard to score runs.

The Positives:
• Wright is still hitting, striking out, but hitting.

• Green is pitching like the pitcher that he was advertised as – a workhorse that gets ground balls.

• Schneider grabbing a couple of knocks.

Random Screams:
• Murphy looks overmatched right now. I hope that I am wrong, but he may get sent down if the Mets make a move.

• Beltran looks scared with people on base. I’ll ignore his would-be double play, but I won’t ignore his approach with the bases loaded in the 7th. As the master of bases loaded, Robin Ventura, used to say – “the hitter is in the driver’s seat”. Beltran approaches these situations like Jay Payton used to – swing early and often.

• As good as Pelf pitches, it is apparent that teams can get in his head. He gets distracted by little things very easily. If I were managing against him in a big game I’d have my leadoff guy crowd the plate, get hit, and semi-charge the mound. Pelf – trust your stuff kid.

• It’s now extremely clear to me why the Mets let Peterson go – he knows things about player’s physical health better than the players themselves. In a perfect world he would team up as a pitching coach with Tim McCarver as manager.

Mets Win – Push Record to One Game Over .500 at 28-27 (6-7 09)

calendarI haven’t lost it just yet. The Mets did win, but that record is not the record of this year, 30-25, but last year’s record after 55 games. No kidding, you say – I said the same. Here’s my point, no matter how you look at it, the team is better than it was last year – the same year that they came within a game of the playoffs. As of now, they are second in the NL East, but first in the wild card. If pitching wins baseball games, as the last 100 years suggests, this team is IN IT. Fasten your seatbelt fans, the season is about to get fun.

Mets won today 7-0, shutting out the Nats – a fairly good hitting team. I don’t care what anyone says, a win is a win. The Mets are winning with minimal runs, good starting pitching, and an excellent bullpen. The Mets’ mantra should be “score five and we are alive”.

The game was decided in the first, as the Mets scored most of their runs then. Livan pitched as he does – smooth and easy for seven innings. At this point, he is slowly becoming the second, if not the first, most reliable pitcher in terms of innings. Jerry needs to have some faith in the Cunning Cuban!

I will continue to endorse this – if the Mets want to pick up a guy I suggest Ichiro – go get him Omar!

Next up is the Phillies, and let’s hope the team is ready for a steady diet of lefties. As of now, the Phils have four lefty starters, Hamels, Happ, Moyer, and Bastard(o), I can’t remember the last time that I saw that.

budlightHere’s my prediction – Church goes on a rampage – and the Mets take the series. I’ll be at two of the games, Wednesday and Thursday, which is rare since I live outside NY. If you are at the game and want to meet up for a beer, drop me a line (truemetsfan27@yahoo.com) and let’s make that happen.

BUCS SWAB THE DECK WITH THE METS (6/4/09)

The Mets were swept out of Pitt today, even after showing some heart with mini-comebacks. The story here was Big Pelf pitching like a Redding. The Pirates looked relaxed the entire series. Why not, they have nothing at all to lose. They could probably kick the crap out of the handful of fans that showed up.

ledge2This sweep will undoubtedly bring out the worst in Met fans. The season is over folks, get on the ledge, pack up your jerseys, and cancel your cable subscriptions. There I said it. Now leave the rest of the, 100 plus game, season to the rest of us. As Piazza used to remind us – “don’t’ get too high and don’t get too low”.piazza3

BTW, Beltran got out of bed and came to the park swinging. Wow, he looked great. In fact, he was pissed after this loss professing that the Mets shouldn’t get swept by the Pirates. Apparently, quiet Carlos found himself some leadership in that hotel bed. Now, let’s see the belushiteam DO something about it. Get pissed off, stay healthy, and play playoff caliber baseball. The NL East is not going to be a one-team race, the Mets will be there. As Belushi said – “Nothing is over” (not even when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor)!!!

Random Screams
When Keith Hernandez first started announcing, he was a homer. Now, he actually seems like he roots against the Mets. The more I hear him, the more his image gets ruined for me. He is basically a selfish, know it all, jackass at times. Classic the other night recounting how important it was that guys like Garvey and Stargell told him to hang in when he was young and feeling as if he did not belong. Cohen then asked him if he ever returned the favor to a young opposing team player. He thought for a second, and said “uh, no”. Not surprising.

Putz finally acknowledges that he is pitching hurt. I admire him pitching, but get him out of there.

ichiroWhile people talk about potential outfield help, from other teams (e.g., Carlos Lee and Holliday), the guy that I want is Ichiro! I bet the Mets could take him and his contract off Seattle’s hands. The guy is a 200 plus hits guy a year, doesn’t strike out a lot, can play a hell of a right field, and would be a perfect leadoff until Jose comes back (and two guy thereafter). That guy will somehow manage to get 3000 hits in MLB. You heard it here first.

I’m digging the new feature in ESPN’s boxscores – pitches per hitter. Check it out.

J.J. Finally Comes Clean

putz2
Per Cerrone on Metsblog, http://www.metsblog.com/2009/06/04/news-putz-may-get-medical-exam/, J.J. revealed to the media that he is going to the doctor to look at his ailing elbow (that hasn’t been good for a while). He thinks that he may end of having surgery. To all this, Gene replies (see below)- no shit!

J.J. is not DYNOMITE!

jjPlain and simple – anyone that has played baseball, above high school (or even at that level), should be able to see – J.J. is hurt. For a guy with a splitter like his not to throw one, let alone on a 0-2 count, screams HELP ME, I AM HURT.

I commend him for biting the bullet, but Mets’ management needs to do putz2something about this. Either J.J. should get some rest, pitch the 7th (Parnell 8th), or even the 6th (Stokes 7th). Pumping fastballs in the low 90s over and over won’t work in the show.

Why I Will Never Take to Beltran

Carlos Beltran is out again with the stomach virus. The same one that John Maine pitched with yesterday, and wanted to keep going “right after he puked”. Speaking of puking, Beltran continues to disappoint me as a Met.

It always seems that if he can sit out he does. Yesterday was a prime example of needing him to either pinch hit, with first and third (Tatis’ AB) or play the outfield for a couple innings (for Pagan) or one (for Sheff). Nope, not Carlos – ala Carlita or Carlos(t). I remember him pulling this when Endy went down and the Mets needed him in center. It’s almost as if he doesn’t want to play less than 100% in case he fails to succeed. I wish we could bottle the feelings that a F-Mart (rookie) has or a veteran on his way out (Sheff) – those guys want to play ALL the time.

Beltran puts up great numbers, but I wish he’d “nut up” once in a while and put the team first. This was the problem that Chipper Jones had a few years ago when Smoltz told him “to get his ass out there and play” – and he did.

update: Beltran didn’t rear (yes I said rear) his head in this game – could have used his glove out there, but at least Sheffield was able to play the entire game on his 40 year old legs. Carlos is a gamer alright!

LIVAN, LIVAN LIKES HIS PITCHING (5/26/09)

livanWow – that’s all I can say, even if it was against the Nationals. As we know from the last couple of years, the Nats are a loosey goosey team that can string hits together to put runs on the board.

Tonight, Livan was just what the doctor (whoops, bad term) ordered. bandaidhat[1]A complete game, rest for the bullpen, and another day closer to getting the regulars back. Mets take the second game of the series 6-1. One of the more relaxing games to watch this season.

Mets Sheffield BaseballThe Mets put the game away in the 7th with a laser (a.k.a. pissrod, sorry it is a baseball term) to left by The Sheff. Very impressive to see Gary hitting homeruns, and with people on base. Between Livan and Gary, the Mets might have the team leaders that Steve Phillips was whining about a few Sundays back.

In the long run, and this may be wishful thinking on my part, the Mets may benefit as a team by playing shorthanded like they are now. They are playing more as a team, relying on small ball tactics to grind out both runs and wins. They know that they can’t squander opportunities, and when the “walking wounded” come back, it will be like new acquisitions. It will be a major boost to get Reyes and Delgado back hitting around Beltran, Wright, and Sheffield. The lost man in all of this is Church. Either that guy has real bad luck, or he has done something to piss off a few organizational members. Omar barely mentioned him tonight during his in-game talk about the status of the disabled.

The Good Stuff:
Livan & Sheff- pitching and hitting.

Two out hits, back to back doubles in the 2nd by Santos and R-Mart (why not, lol).

Productive outs by the Mets, recognizing that have to fight and scratch for every run.

popeyeFMART’s major league debut. The kid has forearms like Popeye. First, MLB RBI, semi robbed by Nick Johnson. He looked how all 20 year olds should look in the major leagues – scared shitless. He looked like most kids when they have to do a class presentation – let me get this overwith and move on. Once he relaxes, he should be fun to watch. Let’s think Wright and Reyes here, not Tyner and Winningham.

zimmermanjonesZimmerman’s consecutive reaching base streak is over 46 games. This guy has the pouty face that makes you angry as a fan. He’s Chipper Jones without the good team!

Jose & the DL: The Other Side of the Coin

UPDATE – Jose DLed as is Church – 15 days each. Beltran is out for the next two games, with a bruised knee, and “plans” to be back in the lineup on Friday. Given what has gone on with the rest of the team, and their analysis of injury timetables, Beltran will back by mid-June. The only positive of this, and it is small, is that F-Mart is coming up. Let’s put a little pressure on the kid – huh. Here’s Gene’s prediction – Murph will hit his ass off and show us all the real hitter that he is. Help us out D, we need it now.

joseWell, it appears that another WBCer, Carlos Beltran, is nursing an injury -ugh, which made me think of Jose and the disabled list. Several media members and baseball fans alike are commenting on the Mets’ decision NOT to put Jose on the shelf, even if it is for 15 days.

Could it be that Omar and Co. are playing a little bit of chess here, at chessthe expense of the Mets’ bench? Hear me out. Consider the guy who wants to buy someone’s used car and tries to negotiate by arriving on a bus! His leverage is gone once he steps off that bus. Omar might be working on something, DeRosa perhaps, and does not want to arrive on a bus. Once Jose is DL(ed) the leverage is gone. Ya never know.

ECK OF AN ANNOUNCER

eckI officially have a man crush on Boston announcer Dennis Eckersley. I always liked Eck, especially after he did an interview of the famous Gibson homerun and said “it was great for baseball”. This guy does not take himself too seriously.

Living in Florida, i am often forced to listen to “away” announcers, and, to date, Mark Grace is my favorite. Tonight, I am listening to Eck and he is cracking me up. This guy is not a self righteous prick like our own Tom Seaver at times. He calls it like a baseball person, no matter who it is for. If it’s a strike, it is for both. He is a joy to listen to. He compliments and criticizes both teams.

He won my heart tonight when describing the HBP of Youk against Santana. In the middle of talking about how Youk was semi-joking with Johan he fills in the blank for the viewers – “Youk is just smiling as he is hit, he mouths SHIT”. The booth gets quiet, and Eck just says “well, let’s forget about that”. Both announcers laugh and move on. Hopefully, Marlins’, Braves’, St. Louis’, and Yankees’ announcers are watching. Eck, if you want to take Wayne’s place on our radio feed – it’s all yours!

COINCIDENCE: I DON’T THINK SO

Hey WBC, thanks for nothing. I stated it earlier and I will stick by it, the WBC helped disable the Mets.

reyes11Now I know why Jose was not running wild, he’s been bothered by this all year and it’s only now crippling.

Putz’s arm hurts as well. It looked great during WBC, but we’ve seen a putz11few outings (for example against the Braves and Dodgers) where he threw fastballs only – a sign, for a guy with multiple pitches, that the arm is hurting.

delgado11Delgado’s out too, another WBC star.

The interesting thing is, thankfully, not all WBC guys are hurting. Well, at least they all got to play (and lose) for their country. It’s not just a Met thing as other teams are facing the same issues (e.g., Rollins), but I stand by this – “F” the WBC.

Update: I forgot Oliver Perez!
