The top ten reasons why my favorite .500 baseball team’s stars should NOT be flushed away and other stuff

Hello fine folks out in internet land! It’s been quite a while since I posted something to KK and I blame that largely on our weekly podcasts being too awesomely awesome. I guess when you follow a .500 team with a blurry future, there’s only so much steam in the tank. Well today I’m going to change the filter and let some exhaust out. But first, this commercial message…

Welcome back! Without any further interruptions, I present

The top 10 reasons why my favorite .500 baseball team should NOT trade any of it’s stars

  1. According to Carlos Beltran, the team would be 23% less likely to perform well without good players
  2. According to Ryota Igarashi, “私は良くない野球が嫌いです!!!!!!”
  3. Have you seen Lucas Duda try to hit? He’s terrible.
  4. Dale Thayer had a 27.00 era last year
  5. I’ll be even more focused on the ungodliness of Davey Johnson wearing a Nationals uniform
  6. I hope David Einhorn hates the Dodgers and bimbos that allow Mr. Met to paint their nails. Wait, what were we discussing? Photo via Ed Leyro
  7. It will be far less likely that I’ll give Fred $19.00 for parking to see Schmuck McDoodles from the Bisons try to get out Carlos Beltran of the Giants
  8. Terry Collins might have a stroke without a bullpen and with our medical staff, he’ll likely die from it
  9. Vegas gives us a 2% change of making the playoffs. That’s a 2% chance Philadelphia fans will have to watch us beat them in the NLCS. That’s not worth throwing away
  10. Darryl is too old to play and BJs are not allowed between innings in the bullpen anymore

In other news

Who wants to buy fredwilpon.com?

I’m selling it to the highest bidder because the Mets don’t care where it points to. Keep those midget porn offers coming…

Cheers!

Time to fix things

What the hell is going on here? Is this bizarro world?  Something special has been going on in Flushing and it makes me want to give Jeff a hug.  Somehow, Met nation has been heard and a dream team of executives are on board to fix this mess and make us proud to be Mets fans again.  Also, Sandy Alderson is following me on Twitter and that’s just great!

As far as the site, much like the Mets, a new energy is coming in led by the great Taryn Cooper, Ben Goldrich & Matt Fazelpoor.  They’ll join our gang and help lead the discussion through 2011.

Kiner’s Korner & The New York Mets…. soon to be out of irrelevancy together!

Help Wanted!

America... YOU decide!

With eyes deeply pushed into the sand, the elder Wilpon waxed poetically about responsibility and the pain of owning his beloved New York Mets.  “We’re a family business” he declares, just like the local dry cleaners that are worth a billion dollars.  We’re just like you.

I’m relieved to know how much they are just like me and feel my pain because I almost forgot I have a hundred million dollars in the bank.  Maybe Fred calls this team a “family business” to justify putting his unqualified son in a position of absolute power over Citi Field? I’m happy to know that although he has no office or direct communication with anyone, his super hearing and vision allows him to see how his son treats people and how he operates this expensive asset.  I’m also happy to know that since this is a “family business”, Wilpon family members will get important positions over qualified outside people.

I enjoyed that show yesterday.  Some of our local journalistic tigers came at the father and son super-team and delivered some hard hitting questions.  Fred was asked specifically what he feels management did wrong the last few years and after generically throwing the word “we’re responsible” out there, he settled on blaming the people he hired and the fact he hired them.  I’m so relieved to know, this was all Omar & Jerry.  The dynamic Wilpon duo did nothing wrong ever and had no involvement in anything that made this situation hard to deal with.  Thank goodness for that.

I’m also happy to hear that Jeff was able to relieve himself  after the show because he was squirming pretty bad.  So bad in fact that he could barely talk other than uttering a catch phrase or two.  He must feel dad doesn’t trust him to handle this press conference, but rest assured he trusts you Jeff.  If he didn’t, he wouldn’t let you run this billion dollar New York icon of a team without having and check and balance system over you.  You’re that good my friend.  You’re that good.

So friends, we go into the future and our leaders will hire a new man in charge.  He must possess skills, although they haven’t decided what they need.  Young old, fat, skinny, famous, anonymous; they admit they have no idea.  Maybe a search firm will find this man, maybe John Ricco (who you don’t trust to be GM) can find them… maybe Jeff can.   I can’t wait…

This morning Jeff went on with Boomer & Craig on WFAN and before Craig lost control and wasted the fan’s time to question Jeff with another non funny Al Dukes anthem, a few little nuggets came out.

Jeff does NOT think about how others around the league view him.  He clearly doesn’t realize that industry perspective is vital toward getting good people to work with you. What they think of you IS important.  He also believes the “core fans” are the rich guys who buy season tickets rather than the guy that can afford 10 games and follows the team daily.  Lowering ticket prices slightly is just a PR stunt; just raise payroll to fix the problems and people will come to the games. Lastly, he implied that he will spend whatever he needs to next year to fix this.  That’s at least what I took from his comments.

Let’s see what happens and please boys… work fast.  Good executives and managers will be snatched up fast.

Between the lines – One man’s take

I'm looking at YOU

So, you’ve noticed that the blog, much like the Mets, has taken the year off.  For some of us, a dreary team has thrown dirt on the fire that inspires us to write and for others (like me), it’s difficult to consistently reexamine negative situations and follow endless roads.  Blogs that aren’t afraid to be controversial tend to get blocked from elements that can make them more entertaining.  Perhaps in the coming offseason, the guests bloggers and members of the media that were afraid to have some fun will realize that our heart might be in a funny place, but it’s also in the right one.

Being that we’re about to pull into football season and I can switch off WFAN until next March, I figure it’s a great time to read between the lines and see if we can figure out where this team is and how to fix it.  I invite my fearless KK team to contribute to this post below, but this is coming from me.

The last month or two has really shown me why the on-field team operates the way they do.  Take the latest event in “As The Mets Turn”, as the trio of Beltran, Castillo and Moron brushed off the visit to the home for one legged men looking for that college money they were promised.   Forget the fact it was a classless move by over privileged boys and let’s look at what this reveals about their personality.

Mr. Castillo, a man who has known a dropped pop up or two was squeamish.   Keep in mind he was not being asked to fight, he was being asked to comfort people who had.   I know some 8 year old boys who would have sat on a bed with the wounded soldiers and this little Mary was too chicken shit to look at them?  If you wondered why he bunts with men on base… this is why.  Thing is, they had him for a while before they offend him a contract… didn’t they see this?  Was he a man for a month?  I’m looking at you Omar…

Mr. Moron, Oliver Perez.  How the hell did whoever actually signed him not put some sort of safety clause into this empty scrotum’s contract?  It’s not like anyone else was going to pay him and you already knew he was a head case.  I’m not going to get into it because it would be like analyzing why a dog sniffs another dogs ass… he does it because he’s a dog.  Cliff Floyd said it best on ESPN “How the hell do you give THAT GUY all that money?”  He never learned to pitch because he doesn’t want to learn…. not because he can’t.

This brings me to the king of the world, Mr. Carlos Beltran.   You can tell he already feels above the sport and is focused more on building stuff with his name on it rather than being part of a baseball team.  Forget the soldiers for a moment… your fucking team is going somewhere together… are you not on this team?  It’s no surprise the team tanked the moment the above three people came back into the locker room.  If this Roberto Clemente wanna be is back next year, he should be in right field and if he has an issue with that, tell him to forfeit his salary and go sit in his new high school.  The other players will respect the hard stance.

Truthfully, I don’t believe this team is as far away from an elite level as most people talk it up to be.  I do however have serious doubts whether management will have the stomach to do what it takes to win.  By this I’m not talking payroll, but rather allowing outside educated opinions to not only have an impact, but have the final word on the direction of the team.    We’ll find out as soon as the season ends what next year will be like.  Will the deck be reshuffled and John Ricco named the next general puppet or will Jeff take a deep breath and get a real trusted baseball man not into the mix, but rather as emperor?  The media has already embarrassed Bob Melvin out of the job (thank god), but will Jeff kneel to public outcry for Wally Backman or will he go for a proven, innovative winner like Tony Larussa or Bobby V?  Also, later in the offseason, we’ll find out if having a GM who can multitask will benefit us.  Sure, they need to get the three clowns out of here, but at the same time he needs to reshape the roster.

In my opinion you can make three moves that will increase your payroll very slightly and change the entire dynamic of the team.  First of all, dump the 3 garbage bags and string together whatever savings you can get.  If you can even get 3-4 million in relief total, you’ve won.   If you can get anything for our closer, Rocky Balboa… try and good luck with that. Duaner Sanchez was on WFAN this summer and basically accused Krod of being selfish.  If Duaner Sanchez is calling me out, I’d look in the mirror.  Next, quietly tell Prince Fielder you’re coming to get him. Trade Prince Ike Davis & someone for a number 2 starter.  The Giants need offense… maybe they’d do Matt Cain (just thinking out loud)?  Next, get Fielder and have the first year salary be a bit lower so you can handle the payroll (Don’t we have 100,000,000 coming off the payroll in 2012?).  Before you get all crazy about Ike…  we need a big stick and there’s no other way to get it.  We’ve never won anything without a big bat in the middle of the lineup.  You need to give something to get something.

That’s it.  If they get an outside GM, a proven manager, sign one bat and trade for a pitcher I think we’re the cream of the NL East.  Hmmm… or maybe I’m as crazy as Ollie.

You may start throwing tomatoes now…

Edit 9/10/20210 P.S. Think about it… Beltran linked himself with Fred going to some VA hospital and not his teammates.  This should tell you how important and above his teammates he feels.  If you ask me, that bank account of his has got him thinking he’s Princess Diana….

Also, it’s been brought to my attention that Fielder is going into his walk year.  Considering the type of contract he’ll want, you’d have to think you can get him without giving up Davis (so long as you keep quality in the deal).  That being said, I’d do a straight swap of Davis for Fielder right now.

Deep in mount Thyroid (just west of the Philippines), The Kiner’s Korner team is held by Jabba the Benitez and his evil henchmen.   Subjected to all sorts of indescribable tortures, they were deprived of the ability to post and forced to provide customer service for Microsoft.

Never fear… a laptop has been slipped into the cell and they will soon begin their underground communication.  They also have a plan to escape…. stay tuned Met land!   They shall be back and they shall be ruthless.

The NY Media Can Reach Down And Bite Me

Hi John Harper!   What’s cookin’ MLB network analysts? Joel Sherman, ex Yankee beat writer… Hey there! Buster Pinstripe Olney & Peter “Bastan” Gammons… nice to see you!   I’m glad you all came because I want to talk to you.  Have a seat.

I’d like to begin by telling all of you that you suck.  Either you’re legitimately awful at analyzing a situation objectively or you’re building a false impression based off the concept that antagonizing millions of Met fans will get you attention.

Last April, with a lesser team (in my opinion) the Mets were picked by SI to go to the World Series.  Their three young pitchers all had a chance to win 15 games (although big Mike Lickmyself had the potential for an off year due to shoulder fatigue).   The Mets were coming off not one fluke season, but three in which they either went to the playoffs or lost the last day of the season.  So it’s already been established what this mix of players can do if they’re healthy.

Fast forward a year and we all know what happened. The injuries mixed with the Three Stooges act in the front office has brought us to where we are today.  John Harper thinks we have the “potential” for a 4rth place finish.  Well, if any teams loses it’s entire core through injury they’re going to suffer… so that’s a statement you can make about most teams. It’s being said to get under the skin of people like me and also to taint the average fan who doesn’t pay attention. Bascially, it’s to create more Yankee fans by making the casual fan think the Mets are awful. ANY team is awful when they have to play the AAA squad all year!

The reality is that the Mets are the 2nd best team in the NL East the moment Jason Bay signs this deal. I don’t see how this is even debatable.  The Braves downgraded and took on older players to a team that was average to begin with last year (just check out their fan message boards if you don’t believe me), the Marlins have some nice arms but aren’t ready and the Nats collected a bunch of average players this off season and should be nice and average.

If the Zambrano rumors ever come to fruition, we are right there with the Phillies as we usually are.  You can’t count injuries into predictions because they’re unpredictable.  Winter is for judging on paper and on paper… we’re very competitive.

Mike Francesa

Here's a great photo of Mikey between breaks

Your homework will be done before class! I promise Biff!

Don’t you get the feeling this team is the George McFly of the NY sports scene?   With all the positive choices they could have made to leak the Bay news to; they choose some bloated dickhead Yankee fan who Met fans dislike so he can sit on it for a day, tease the fan base and announce it as an afterthought 2 hours into his show, then ignore it the rest of the day.  Why does this team constantly make me have to use run-on-sentences??  For god’s sake have some pride Jeff !!!!!  Tell Omar if he gives Mike any more news he has to clean your toilet with a toothbrush.  Give the news to Adam Rubin (you owe him), Matt Cerrone, Linda Cohn or if it has to be WFAN; at least Boomer & Carton.

Jason Bay

Ok, so we have a younger & healthier Delgado now that plays left and joins a really nice core.  I’m fine with it so long as Omar gets us a good #2.  The clock is on…

Winter Roundtable

Well, much like the Los Angeles Angles of Anaheim and the Jackie Robinson Rotunda of Queens … the winter meetings of the fall are underway.  This is the time of year where the Mets panic their fan base as they posture to get top tier free agents at a bargain price.  I can’t and won’t believe that Omar & his band of ex GM’s and managers they’ve assembled in Flushing will settle for half baked players after such a disaster of a season.  I fully expect to see Matt Holliday in left and two decent pitchers on the staff .  For a laugh, tune into Kiner Korner if this doesn’t happen!

For what it’s worth… I smiled a little when Scott Boras called out Jeff & Fred

Posted By Nik Kolidas

Anyhow, as we look forward into 2010; the winter meetings are a great time to close the book on 2009 and look forward.  Here is the official 2010 roundtable from the gang here at KK.

Which player do you go into the offseason saying “The Mets NEED to move this guy”?

GENE: I don’t know if there is a particular player that I feel that way about but I certainly wouldn’t mind getting rid of Ollie

ROB: Well, luckily the guy who I feel should be moved, Schneider, is now with the Phillies.. I think my guy would be Tim Redding. The Mets, or Omar, have this habit of looking at the most positive aspects of a player and expanding on it. Redding had a fine September, but I do not think it was a coincidence that the former Washington National did his best when the pressure was off.

EMILY: I’m not sure I’d say anyone “needs” to be moved. Sure, they could do without guys like Castillo or Perez. But I think it’s more about who is added, and less about who is taken away.

Nik: I’d like them to let Tatis walk followed by Castillo, just to get past the “will they or won’t they trade him” business.

There are no obvious fixes. The best free agents are flawed, but the Mets minor leagues is starting to rehabilitate but still is light. Do you want more trades or free agent signings?

GENE: It depends on who’s available via trade. If there are guys out there who will become available that can fill holes I’d rather go the trade route.

Nik: I have absolutely no confidence in this front office and ownership.  What I’d LIKE to see is a trade for Halladay and a 2nd dependable pitcher (What I fear is Jeff signing a low level pitcher and calling him a #2) Then I’d like them to grab Sheets as a reclamation project.  No Marquis unless it’s as a 5th starter.

EMILY: Trades!!

ROB: I feel the Mets should go the free agent route, with maybe making ONE AND ONLY ONE, big splash trade. If they can make a deal for a guy like Crawford, I’m all for it. More so than Roy Halladay because the Mets need to get younger. I’m not a tremendous fan of Matt Holliday and feel recent quotes about wanting to play in NY is for negotiations. I’m less of a fan of Bay and I already stressed my concearns with Lackey. I don’t think you give out more than 3-4 year contracts on anything other than aces anyway. Way more pitchers fall apart by the end of the contract than otherwise.

I’d like to see the Mets do a bunch of little signings. Let’s say they trade for Carl Crawford as an example. I’d be happy going into spring with the Mets signing Randy Wolf  and Jason Marquis, getting a righthanded complement to Murphy at 1b, a new utlity infielder, a 2nd backup outfielder with pagan (endy chavez?), resigning putz, and getting a 2nd lefty for the pen. The idea this offseason should be quantity, not just quality.

Newsday’s David Lennon posted in a blog that Jason Marquis wants to be a met. He proposed offering him a 2 year 16m deal straight out of the box when free agency opens. What do you think?

EMILY: Someone who actually wants to be a Met?? Well what are we waiting for?! And a pitcher than can actually hit might be good company for Santana. But in all seriousness, the Mets need to think long and hard on this deal, less we have another Ollie-gate on our hands!

Nik: That’s fine so long as it’s not a real contract and the money is Monopoly.   It’s such a Met move to overpay for someone off their career year.  He’ll be here forever winning 9 games a year and be team spokesman.  Help!

GENE: No thanks..he has a career ERA of 4.48 and after getting off to a fast start this year he didn’t exactly finish strong.

ROB: I would be open to that. I don’t necessarily do it straight out of the box first day, but if the starting pitching market seems overly expensive, i’d go for it. I wouldn’t want this obviously to be the #2 starting pitcher pickup, but i’d like to see a guy like Marquis in the back of the rotation. I think the Mets should look to two starters, and have Pelf and Maine be fighting for a rotation spot this spring with the loser in AAA or the pen.

Daniel Murphy was among the league leaders in XBH during the 2nd half, and while he had his share of errors, looked very fluid and natural at 1b for the most part, even recording a web gem of the year candidate. The Mets best position prospect is Ike Davis, a slugging power 1B whose defense is expected to be at least good. Should the Mets leave 1B alone this year, go with a short term option like Adam Laroche or a returning Delgado, or find a long term option via trade?

ROB: Murphy showed me enough offensively and defensively to give him a shot in 2010. Of the free agents the only one who intrigues me is Delgado, simply because when healthy he does make a huge difference in the lineup. From what I read the injury he sustained shouldn’t linger into next year, so it’s possible he has one more season left. However, I’m ok with Murphy as 1B IF AND ONLY IF, the Mets sign a competent righthanded complement.

GENE: I’d go with a short term option via trade, Lyle Overbay. I think that the Jays may make him available and if they do I think he’d be a good fit. He’s a gap hitter who plays good defense and is a FA in 2011.

EMILY: Let Murph stay where he is and grow in that position. Let’s focus our energy elsewhere…

Nik: Why not let Murphy play and learn from Nomar Garciaparra?   I have no idea what Ike Davis is yet, but I’d be ok with him fighting for a job and maybe coming in to platoon mid year.

Should the Mets pursue the big 3 free agents: Holliday, Bay and Lackey?

GENE: I’d go after Holliday and Lackey and then try to make a trade for another SP.

ROB: Pursue yes. Sign? Depends on the market. none of the three are perfect fits, so it has to be a deal the Mets feel they can deal with not just in 2010, but 2015.

EMILY: I like that the Mets are talking Holliday – I like him over Bay. Lackey could be a good addition to the rotation…

NIK: Bay isn’t bad so long as we get two pitchers to go with him and at a reasonable price, Holliday would make me happy. Lackey has a questionable injury history.
What do you want the mets to look for in a catcher: Offensive or Defensive prowess?

ROB: Defense, defense, and more importantly – pitch calling. Offensive catchers are a rare breed, and the Mets current starters and the prospects coming up need a guy who can help the development process at the MLB level.

EMILY: I’d love to think we could have both, but I’ll settle on offense. Santos ‘ bat this year was a wonderful thing, and I’d like to see more of that.

GENE: Defensive. I believe a defensive catcher always gives a team a huge advantage as being able to stop a running game, especially with the Phillies in our division, is huge.

NIK: There aren’t more than one or two guys in the majors that are any good.  I’d love someone who isn’t terrible and has some leadership.

How do you feel about the 1986 love the Mets/SNY is showing right now?

GENE: To be honest, I don’t really care. I mean I guess it’s nice but it doesn’t really matter to me either way.

NIK: It’s about time.  It’s not just 86 love, it’s reaching back to the only time in the last 40 years the Mets did anything right and trying to have those guys rub off on the future.  1999-2000 was too short for me to count and in the end Benitez created a ledged..  I’d rather see those guys play at 50 than the current bunch at 25.   Younger guys are sick of hearing about 86, but if you had just lived it you’d know.  It’s the reason I can listen to Jeff Wilpon and still be a fan of this team.

ROB: I’m worried to be honest. Not so much in the broadcasting side, but I worry the Mets are making PR moves instead of hiring the best staff available. Not to take away anything from the credentials of these men, but I’d be mad if better people were past over simply because they were not former players or from rival teams.

EMILY: Well if CitiField isn’t going to show the ’86 love, who will? I have no problem looking back to the past. At very least, it helps fans remember what greatness feels like and give hope that lightning can strike twice.

Which player in 2010 do you have the most confidence in improving in 2010, and which do you feel the least?

EMILY: I’m excited to watch Niese and Nieve grow, assuming they make the team. I’m nervous to see what becomes of Castillo after a surprisingly not-disappointing 2009.

ROB: I have the most confidence in Wright, since he’s always working on his swing, and you know he’ll put in the effort to fix. If 2009 was his off year, i’m excited for his 2010.

I have the least confidence in Luis Casillo, who is probably one false step to another knee operation. I would deal him as quickly as possible whle he has any value, even if it means having a weaker option at 2b for 2010.

The Mets image is at its lowest point since the Art Howe era. The last few years have been the equivalent of being punched in the groin at the finish line of a race, and last year was like watching a prized race horse pull lame out of the gate.

GENE: I believe the player that will improve most is Bobby Parnell. I think if he can work on his offspeed stuff then we have a guy who can be a very good setup man. As for least…….I’m not really sure, I guess I’d go with Thole.

NIK: I think Perez has a shot if he gets his head together.  Any catchers we have at the moment are all useless sacks of shit (Baseball wise).

What can the Mets do this offseason short of buying every free agent or firing all decision makers, to make you say I Gotta Believe in 2010?

Nik: Here is my fantasy 2010 Met situation.

  1. Dec 2009: Fred Wilpon announces his son will be moved to the dog food division and the Mets will be run by his buddy Sandy Koufax
  2. Dec 2009: Wilpons apologize for fucking with the uniform and go back to the actual Met scheme.  The logic being “If it doesn’t play in Shea and doesn’t look like the Mets, is it the Mets?”
  3. Dec 2009: Mets pull off deal for Roy Halladay.  Goodbye Pelfrey, Parnell and F Mart.
  4. Jan 2010: In a stunning move, Omar flexes his newfound power and fires Jerry Manuel.  Bobby V is brought on to take care of the clubhouse.
  5. Jan 2010: The Mets announce Maine has been resigned and will pitch from the pen w/ prospect Brad Holt.
  6. Jan 2010: Jason Bay & dependable pitcher is signed to be the 3rd starter.

To actually answer the question: I don’t think there is any one move that can make me feel better about this team.  Calling Toronto is a start though.

ROB: There’s no magic cure or slogan. The Mets will be beaten on talk radio, in the papers, and in the blogoshpere until next year, and only by winning will anything get alleviated.

The only move I can think of that might make the fan base more confident about the direction of the team monetarily and in decision making is if they make a big splash in the free agent market: but not for Holliday, Bay or Lackey. I believe if the Mets went all out to sign uber international prospects Aroldis Chapman and/or Yusei Kikuchi, both 18 year olds with once-in-a-lifetime makesups, it would show the Mets are willing to spend and keeping an eye to the future of the franchise, not just the present.

GENE: I think that if the Mets can make smart moves and show that they do have a plan for the future that I would feel more comfortable. Smart trades, smart FA signings, and no press conferences please.

EMILY: They need to make a big move. A move that has every Mets fan checking his blackberry, switching over to SNY, or calling his buddy every 5 minutes to see if it’s a done deal. Remember 2008, waiting to see if the Santana deal was finalized? That excitement, that feeling that the next year was going to be THE year….that’s what the Mets need to do in 2010. Granted, Mets fans are also far more jaded now than they were 2 years ago – but still. Something big, something unexpected, that’s what I think we need to believe.

Does the continued presence of Jeff Wilpon shake your confidence in the team going forward?

GENE: Jeff is one of the least talented baseball people around. That said, I am not sure that his input really affects the daily operations of this team. I could be way off here, but the team has the players to win – the failure of them to execute has little to do with Jeff.

ROB: Not particularly. I think the backlash to ownership is to be expected, but I just don’t feel like they’re particularly bad or evil in comparison to any other owner. I don’t think Jeff is great, but I have so little to go by. I have no idea how many positive or negative decision – that we know of and that we don’t – he is responsible for. I feel like when things go wrong blaming ownership is the easy answer. I didn’t hear complaints on the Wilpons in 2006. I also might be one of the few that is happy ownership doesn’t listen to every whim of the fan base. I do not want a fan running the team.

NIK: Lorinda de Roulet in drag is torture as the leader of an entertainment product.  I can’t be confident with him running the show, but what choice do we have?

Do you think this team not having single uniform impacts the connection with the fan base?

GENE: Older fans maybe, but younger fans are used to this by now. I would like to see the Mets stick with one uniform (vintage) on Sundays though. This team is lacking a sense of history, and this might be a way to re-establish some.
ROB: Not at all. Jets fans right now are ecstatic about thier team despite being annoyed with them switching to the Titans uniforms a couple of times a year. The Mets had just as many uniform changes in the 99-2000 teams which were beloved by fans. The problem is the fan base doesn’t trust ownership and the players currently on the squad, while talented, lack an arrogant swagger which characterizes New Yorkers. It is why I find the backlash towards the one player who has it, Jose Reyes, so puzzling.

NIK:  Essentially, all you have to tie different generations of fans together is the uniform.  I think without consistency, you’re consistently rewriting the book instead of adding to it.  I love the original look and would love to see it every day.  At least, I’d love to see the Ice Cream man uniforms gone.

Do you consider John Lackey a good #2 starter?

ROB: Yes, he would make a very good #2 starter. He’s polished, a workhorse, and has excellent numbers that should be good in a move to the NL. My fears with Lackey is he does have a reputation that when he is not “on” of struggling to get through a game, and the fact he tacked on so many innings early. While he’s still only in his early 30′s, after seeing how quickly other workhorses broke down in thier 30′s, I hesitate giving him a 5 year deal. I also question bringing in a groundball specialist when 2b and 1b have questions defensively.

This reminds me a bit of the troubles the Mets have made in recent years, going after the best option no matter what. Lackey is the best option, but with the franchise in such a compromising state (I can easily see next year as a rebuilding year as much as a championship caliber team) I question whether now is the right time to give a 5 year deal to such a starter when there are so many cheaper options who are greater question marks, but can be had on 1 – 2 year deals.

GENE: I didn’t until I saw him in the playoffs. He reminds me of a young Kevin Appier. He is a bulldog-type pitcher and the team could use that. His presence, though I am skeptical if the Mets will get him, would take the pressure off the rest of the staff (past Santana).

NIK: I think it depends on the rest of the rotation.  He’s kind a 2b for me in that he doesn’t stay healthy all the time and you can’t pencil him in for 16 wins.

If you could change a single thing about the front office, the stadium and the roster, one single move for each, what would it be?

NIK: Front Office- Ownership should set a payroll and let the baseball people figure out what to do with it.  The Stadium- Remove all Dodger logos from the park, The Roster- Add Roy Hallady

GENE: Front office – Bernie Madoff would be taken off the payroll. Stadium – lowering the walls is actually what I would have recommended. Roster – a power outfielder, preferrably either a righty or lefty that pulls the ball. As Utley and others showed the Mets last year, Citi is not big at all down the lines.

ROB: I’m going to take that in reverse order. For the roster, I think the Mets need a real grinder of a player. Preferably someone with playoff experience but more importantly someone who made it as a regular in the majors based on hard work and perseverence, and not natural talent. Someone who has a chip on his shoulder. Watching the Jets, I feel like they need a player with that sort of Rex Ryan style of, for lack of better word, CHUTZPAH.  Francuer is close to the player they need, but I’m looking for someone who wants to prove to the world his worth.

The other important aspect is to get a strong pitch calling catcher. I do not care about offense from the position. Pelfrey, Perez and Maine need help, and if you look up the numbers these guys did worse with Schneider than any other catcher this season. The Mets need someone who can help these guys who have talent, but lack either the control (Pelfrey), mental toughness (Ollie) and the focus ( Maine ) to take thier games up to thier potential.
I did not make the time to make a trip to Citifield, so I cannot say what needs improvements there. I find it rather funny actually the amount of complaints about the new stadium after years of complaining about Shea. I guess some things did get carried over. The one change I would recommend is putting the Mets logo somewhere outside the stadium. I passed it a few times and realized if I didn’t know what the stadium was for, I’d have no idea what franchise dwelled within. I’d also love to see some variation of the Neon Players on the outside of the stadium as well.

Finally for front office, and it sounds like the Mets might be doing this anyway, I’d steal an idea from the Yankees and try to hire a guy who is not part of the chain of command but advises it similar to Gene Micheals role. preferably a former player or a fan of the franchise, who may notice things the execs don’t, like the lack of Mets memories at Citifield to start the year. Even if the plan always was to have it added in later (and from what i’ve read it was) there was not an adequate job of letting the fan base know that. They need more than a customer relations guru, they need a fans relations guru.

The Mets Blogosphere has been exceedingly, and rightfully, extremely negative. Let’s try something different to end this Roundtable and bring up something you feel positive about the Mets going into this offseason.

NIK:  The Shake Shack is primed for another amazing 2010.

GENE: The Mets are a few pieces away from being a serious World Series contender. We have a good core of players we just need to add some complimentary guys. It may not happen this year but I believe good times are ahead.

EMILY: I think…well, hope, that the front office finally “gets it”. I “think” they’re as frustrated as we are and know that this team needs a makeover more than Susan Boyle ever could  That gives me hope for this off-season. Remember the scene from Titanic, where Jack tells Rose to step up onto the ledge of the ship and close her eyes? And once she opened her eyes, it felt like she was flying – all because she trusted Jack. Well, I may be foolish like Rose was, but I trust the front office will do what’s best this year. We’re all closing our eyes this off-season and when we open them, Omar will have his hands wrapped around our waists, and we’ll be flying. Let’s go into the off-season with that horribly disturbing, yet optimistic, visual.

ROB: Here’s something nobody brings up. The Mets had a Murphy’s Law year last year. Everything that could go wrong, did. No one played beyond expectations for the full season, and few match expectations. That is EXTREMELY abnormal. Even the worst low market teams have some breaks happen. I don’t believe in karma and luck, but I do believe in the Law of Averages. The Mets core is still a solid core. With 2009 fresh in everyone’s minds I can easily picture the league taking the Mets for granted, and I can easily picture the Mets reminding everyone why they were picked to win it all a year ago.

Think about it. What are the odds that all 3 of Beltran, Reyes and Wright have subpar or injury riddled seasons again? Is it really hard to believe that one of the group of Perez, Pelf, or Maine, if not two, who had good 2008s, will rebound in 2010? It’s not the acquisitions that will make the impact, it’s the ones currently on the roster

Another GM in waiting

God help us all

If there is a god… somehow the antichrist world series gets cancelled with an impromptu strike.  If it HAS to happen (much like a root canal or death itself), I hope the Phillies don’t score a single run in four short games with Rollins getting hit in the nuts on the 2nd to last pitch.  Oh the horror…

You know what sucks about tonight… we had another shot at those fuckers and the Phillies are took our ace and our place atop of the division.  Jeff, Met fans just had the underpants yanked up a bit higher tonight… please remember this feeling when you’re bidding on free agents this winter.

You just need to sit back and wonder how it came to this.    If there is a way for two teams to lose, I hope it happens.  Let’s get past the stupid parade and get on to hot stove.  With all due respect to good sportsmanship, the Yanks and Phils can go fuck themselves

Game 6 and more!

As you’ve noticed, Kiner’s Korner has been lagging in posts due to the mental disability caused by this hemorrhoid of a postseason.  Unless we get an early holiday gift from the Angles, our two biggest rivals will be meeting in the series to decide who’s going to rub our noses in crap next year.  Gee; I can’t wait to find out who it’s going to be??

It brings me back to where I was 23 years ago today as Metsblog helpfully reminded me today.   It was the last time Yankee fans felt exactly the same way we do right now. I was between the 3rd base coach and Rich Gedman in the lower boxes thanks to my father’s wad of $20 bills and Shea’s old lax policies toward paying your way to a great seat.  We almost walked out to “beat the traffic” at out number two, but thank goodness I refused to leave.  I remember crying as a kid and telling him “it’s not over”.  I guess sometimes in life you’re right.

Do you REALLY want to come in this game?

haha... the 80's

Thinking back on it; it reminds me of how much fun it can be to be a Mets fan.  Lately, we’re so caught up with our distaste for the atmosphere around the team that we forget what summers at Shea used to feel like.  We’re Met fans because we don’t like it easy and sometimes it ain’t easy.

Best day ever!

Odds and ends

There are a bunch of things I’ve wanted to give my 2 cents on the last few weeks and my soap box finally got fixed.

Aroldis Chapman – Ok, so logic dictates you don’t spend 60 million dollars on an unproven pitcher when you have a thousand needs on your team.  That being said, our buddies in Queens never outbid anyone on a player other teams want and maybe this is the time we show the baseball world who their daddy is.   Sometimes a team needs to make a statement that’s larger than the actual player and this is possibly it.  If the fan base knows there’s this phenom coming up, it’ll help energize us and give the team some good press for a change.  It’s a little illogical from a roster perspective, but I say nail this guy fast and start stepping on the Yankee’s parade.  It’s not my money to spend, but in a way it is.    If Chapman is pitching, I might go to Citi and watch it.

John Lackey – I think it’s insane to give John Lackey all that money when you have the prospects to trade for Roy Halladay if you really wanted to.  If Lackey wants to sign for something modest, then great, but to overpay for a #2 starter who takes a month off every year is unsettling.  I’d sell Mr. Met himself to get Halladay.

Matt Holliday-  Prince Fielder?  I’m sorry; I thought you said Prince Fielder.  Ok, we don’t have the ability to get both Fielder and Halladay, so assuming that can’t be done, this isn’t a terrible option.  A lot of people thought mark Teixeira & Beltran would be terrible in NY and both those thoughts were misguided.  That being said, Fielder would be a hero here and if the Wilpons really wanted to step up, they’d find a way get us one of those two players and then buy the 2nd best version of the other.

Backman &  The Teufel Shuffle Welcome back boys!  It’s funny how even 23 years later the Mets still can’t help but pin them against each other.  Somewhere, Davey is smiling. John Stearns being back is actually what makes me the happiest as I’d love to see him manage the team someday.  Mookie; well, I loved ya Mook and then you went and wore a Cardinals hat in the playoffs.  I know your son played for them for 6 days, but did you need the outfit buddy?  Go F yourself.

Olle Perez hater Metstradamus wants Brian Schneider back I respect your opinion big guy, but although you make some valid points; I have to disagree.  This team needs less negative energy and Brian has 1982 Met leaking from every fiber of his being.  I don’t know where the answer lies, but I know it isn’t in Schneider’s bat.   I do love your “Who would you like to see put in a weather balloon to float away?” poll.

Marty Noble and the Media There’s this feeling that the Mets have fallen below the Marlins and Braves and there is nothing Omar can do in the off-season the fix things.  What a bunch of crap that is. I’m sick of the media dumping on this team like it’s a 2nd division franchise.  I realize it’s been a 3 ring circus the last few months, but on opening day 5 out of the 9 starters will be former All Stars in their prime and that’s without making a move.    Work must be done, but this team is in no way irrelevant in 2010.

Kiner’s Korner- We have a few interviews coming up and an end of the season round up… so stay tuned.  Same bat time – same bat channel!

“Omar and Jerry must step up”

What a crock of shit.  If I’ve learned anything in life it’s that actions speak louder than words.  What have they BEEN doing so far?  He is “demanding better and excepting better”… how do you expect better from the same product and demand better from the same people? When I bite into an apple… I taste apple each and every time.

Jeff said the Mets will have “ONE OF THE highest payrolls in baseball”.  As a NYC franchise with a new ballpark, I expect them to be the SECOND HIGHEST payroll across the board.  He also takes responsibility for the lack of communication regarding injuries to the media.  Who gives a rat’s ass what the media knows?  I’m only concerned about the amount of time players spend on the field.  Basically the same muscles and docs are coming back next year.  Also, the LAST thing this team needs is more Jeff Wilpon being involved.  This team will never get it. The same mushy rhetoric we hear each winter was delivered with contrived passion. Jeff will never understand that we don’t need to hear that he’s hurt by this year… we want to SEE how hurt he is through actions and see that he’s learned from the experience. Blind faith that the odds won’t strike again is his answer.

 Unacceptable.

How do you retain the same core staff after the team gave up?  They clearly weren’t able to lead the team to a respectable finish after devastating injuries.  Really… protect Hojo and let each and every one of them (Omar included) go. Also, slick bringing back Backman, but is that a bone that they thing will keep the fans happy? I guess he’ll coach Gerald Williams in AAA?

So far not so good.  I hope to see something unexpected this winter or it’s going to be forever Groundhog Day in Flushing.  Jeff gave a very weak “maybe” when he talked about free agent signings.

By the way… for those of you who watched the SNY broadcast, how much of a kiss ass is  Bobby Ojeda and his sidekick?  Chris Carlin did have some balls to ask Wilpon if he’s letting Jerry & Omar of the hook by merely reshuffling the deck and Jeff said they’re “on the hook”  What does that mean Mr. Wilpon? They weren’t on any hooks at 90 losses? If not, what does this “hook” amount to?

Sad.

C’mon Jerry… Do it! Do it!

Don’t you get the feeling (maybe it’s wishful thinking) that Jerry is going to resign today?  Man I hope so….

ENOUGH!

I HAVE HAD IT.  Sit back boys and girls because I’ve got to blow off some steam.

What the bloody fuck has happened here?  How has it come to this where it’s not even September yet and I’m watching meaningless games?  Why is this happening?  I guess the general thing you can ask is… “What the fuck?”

Well everyone, let’s go through the official 2009 WTF List.

I can't hear you kissing back there! Kiss harder!

WTF #1:  WBC

This is what kicked off out fantastic first season at the Shake Shack.  We sent every impact player we had outside of Johan away from a proper spring training and it seems like we haven’t seen them since doesn’t it?  Lay this blame on ownership who needed to carefully lick Bud Selig’s tender hairy ass more than every other owner and ended up contributing to the biggest disaster in Mets History.

Greatest idea ever... anywhere

WTF#2: Karma

The Mets as an organization don’t do anything half assed except when they’re physically running the bases.   It’s not good enough to win a title, we need to win 108 games and do the surreal in game 6 to get there or pull off an all time baseball miracle in 69’.  When they lose, they need to lose more than any team ever.  When every year some pitcher throws a no hitter, we have to never throw one ever.  When they make a bad trade, it has to the worst one in baseball history.  When they get hurt, they need to have the ENTIRE roster go down.  When they sign a few aging stars, the players have to throw bleach at people, threaten reporters, have “I’m not gay” press conferences or live on houseboats.  The executives can’t just be bad, they need to be fucking the secretaries, threatening to beat up the farm system or trading franchise players because of personal vendettas.  It’s half the reason we enjoy them… they embody extremism, which is what NYC is all about.

Who would have thought this concept would be a negative?

WTF#3: Omar

As a collection, we as fans don’t know what’s going on behind the scenes beyond the evidence that leaks onto the papers or the playing field.  That being said, you can usually tell chaos when you smell it in the air.  There is a reason when every player went down, they didn’t get any reinforcements when they needed them and the ship was allowed to veer this far off course.  Ultimately this is on Omar’s shoulders as he should have taken the inside information only he knows and found a way to steer the ship.   The Mets are always about chaos and he’s proven not to be able to succeed in that environment.

It's your nose, you know. Fans are funny that way, they take a dislike to things. They'll pick on a nose.

WTF#4:  Fred & Jeff Wilpon.

In what world do two men have a billion dollar asset and insist on having non professionals involved in running it?  Well, The Yankee world was like that for years and they only developed good teams when the boss wasn’t in the mix.  Other great teams with meddlesome owners included the Reds of the 80’s, the Orioles & Marlins, late 70’s A’s… wait no, they sucked I’m sorry.

We should have signed Manbearpig and let Al Gore run the team

WTF#5: Olle, Maine & Reyes

Who would have thought that between Olle and Derek Lowe the right answer was to get neither of them?  I’ve been an Olle supporter and I have to admit I’m totally 100% wrong.  Between him & John Maine (who wants surgery desperately, but has nothing that needs a repair) the win total this year is embarrassing.  Maine needs to come back as a pen arm next year and Olle needs to go do something else for a living.

About Reyes, who doesn’t think he’s not busting it back because he knows he’ll be traded if he shows himself to be healthy?  What a disaster…

I kinda of miss Mo Vaughn, don't you?

WTF#6: Delgado & Putz

These two important players came into the year hurt and management knew it.  They had all spring to get a capable backup and chose to cross their fingers.  Not only that, they actually sent Putz to pitch in the freaking WBC!  You can’t make this shit up…

Yeah, enough said.

WTF#7: The training staff

I bought the “best in the world” line for a long time and as player after player went down I figured that management was making them play through tweaks and aggravating injuries.  Then more players went down, and then even more. Now, Johan & Frenchy are down and there is literally not a player left worth watching.  A loaded, championship caliber baseball team has been reduced to Nationals status by way of a plague of vague injuries.  I don’t even know how Reyes got hurt, do you?

“Best in the world” or not , it’s time to honestly examine the people responsible for keeping the tweaks from happing in the first place.

Stop drooling

WTF#8: Our Benitez meter

How is it on 24 and we have the record we do?  Without Krod can you imagine what the record would be?

What's up with that?

WTF#9: My new fancy pants

I bought some fancy pants when I was on vacation and the pocket ripped… what’s up with that?

Bobby V and the Mercury Mets. Never has a great idea ever worn a bad idea so well.

WTF#10: The overall product

My slingbox beamed this disaster to me, 4,937 miles away in Greece.  For three weeks I watched game after game of torture.  Yes Fred, I know you think Met fans are 2nd class, but I actually watched your pitiful product while on vacation. We do care. Can you please fix this?  Please no Ricco or any other projects that haven’t produced successfully before.  Face it, you have bad judgment when picking executives.  Get a veteran, proven baseball man to run the show and let Bobby V come in there and run the on field ship.  Please….

Thanks a lot

In closing I’d like to give a giant middle finger to the Texas Rangers for embarrassing me by wiggling a fat Nolan Ryan at me for 3 months and then handing him to the Daily News.   Thanks guys!  And finally Pedro…my buddy Pedro.  You should have retired after Boston my friend.

And the walls…are crumblin’ crumblin’

I’m not sure what to say.  It’s my turn to post an update and honestly I’ve got nothing left for this team.  It’s hard to be enthusiastic when the team itself has given up on us.  I understand the injuries, the luck and the bad choices in spring training, but other teams fight through it.  Perhaps a point can be made that backups are exposed when they play too often, but how is lack of talent connected to fundamental baseball?  Why are they so absent minded and sloppy?    As the days tick by and the losses pile up, the fans grow indifferent.  It didn’t have to be this way.

If you remove yourself from the outrageous amount of impact players sent away to the WBC (all of which had ruined seasons) and put yourself back in June when the team had the chance to stick with Philly, you’ll see a fan base begging for the obvious and a front office frozen in its tracks.  They were petrified of change with a boner for the status quo.   No matter if it was Omar, Jeff or the Easter Bunny… nothing was done to give this team stability when it most needed it.  Reyes & company were never coming back and they knew it.  Hell, as much as we didn’t want to believe it, we all knew it.  We joked about it in a half horrified way.  Who hasn’t said “”I bet we see Wagner first” all the way back in June?   The front office was so afraid of making another Kazmir deal that it didn’t pull the trigger at all on anything and let the season deteriorate into what it is today.  Frankie was good idea, but it was too little too late.

I’m not giving up, because I love watching baseball.  I wait all year for these six months and as much as I’m enraged that these overpaid circus performers want to take away my fun… I’m not going to give in to it.  I’m going to watch and pretend there is something happening in Flushing.  I’ll check out the September call ups, maybe enjoy some Holt fastballs and then come November I hope that whole damn bunch of them are out on their asses.  Yes, Jerry…even you so long as Bobby V comes in.  If it’s not Valentine, then I guess the Wilpons will do what they do best and hire an inexperienced dry piece of toast.

I love how management is thinking of moving John Ricco in to the GM chair and bumping Omar into scouting or something like it.  This team never brings in fresh blood and I guarantee a Ricco/ Omar tandem is a bad idea just based on Ricco not having been a GM before.  What will it take for Fred to take the team away from Jeff and hire outside proven baseball people to fix this mess?   Can John Ricco cut his teeth somewhere else please?

Very soon, I’m going to tick up the Benitez Meter a click based on the Johan game, but considering the week Krod has had, it’s going to be a lukewarm click.  Any suggestions for Armando’s next big adventure?

Don’t Look Now….

Well, being in first the last 3 years didn’t work, let’s try being way behind this time and see how that goes.

Avert your eyes away from the dancing fools for a moment and you’ll realize that the team is just six and a half games in back of the wild card with 2 months to play. Hats off to the “double play machine” who turned back the clock and did what he does best… pinch hit grand slams.

Enjoy Ryan Church guys

Reyes & Putz have both said they’re about a week away, Wagner is about a week away… Delgado might be here in 10 days or so. Who knows.. the next chapter in this book might be the best one. If we somehow pull this one off, the entire fan base will have to send Atlanta a Thank You Card for gift wrapping Jeff Francoeur for us. What were they thinking?

By the way, Omar’s statement after the fact yesterday was really hard to watch. It’s hard to believe that the two guys who spoke are running an organization worth a billion dollars. It’s all about who you know isn’t it? I felt sorry for Adam Rubin seeing him on SNY later in the evening. The guy seems really scared he might be removed from his big break position. Omar is really a jerk for doing what he did.

Holy hell has broken loose at Citi Field… hide the kids!

You can't separate them

You’ve got to be fucking kidding me Omar.  Ladies and gents, this front office has officially joined hands with their Billy Martin/ Boss AL ancestors and pranced off into a place where books are written and stories are born.

I read about this stuff today while working and wanted to reserve judgment until I actually saw the clip.  People on ESPN and WFAN were trying to insinuate that Jeff forced Omar to make a fool of himself and I wanted to look at his body language and eyes before putting down my own thoughts.

Here it is to reacquaint yourself.

http://web.sny.tv/media/player/mp_tpl.jsp?w=mms%3A//a1503.v222062.c22206.g.vm.akamaistream.net/7/1503/22206/v0001/mlb.download.akamai.com/22206/2009/daily/07/072709_nym_omarpresser_800.wmv.wmv&type=v_free&vid=8852&_mp=1

Verdict:  By Omar’s body language, he’s telling me he was forced to fire Tony and was angry at Adam Rubin instead of being angry at the man who actually committed the indiscretions.  It’s like cursing the step you stubbed your toe on.  What idiot walked into the step to begin with?

Yo Adam! Look out for Tony Two Toes! He's looking fo ya'

What I watched was a premeditated attack on a sportswriter in retaliation for knocking off one of his buddies.  Hey Jeff & Omar… this isn’t the fucking mafia you stupid fools.   The on-field team wouldn’t run over a catcher if Jessica Alba was catching, but Omar will run over a sportswriter for picking on a “teammate”.

How insane is it that Omar had time to plan FOR A SECOND PRESS CONFRENCE IN A ROW and came up with this brilliant bundle of words?  For god sake hire the man a writer if he can read English and fine him for every word of his own he utters.  What the hell was he thinking?   How do you say that out loud???   If Omar thinks a woman has a nice ass, does he go up to her and ask to grab it?  His verbal filter is pushed so far up his ass it’s coming out his ears.

Also, where is his grubby little sidekick during all this?  He needs to put on his diaper and step up to take responsibility over the mess he’s 100% involved in.  Jeff Wilpon… you do speak don’t you?

A fly on the wall in Citifield just e-mailed me this conversation between Fred & Jeff:

The Mets family in happier times

Fred:  Jeffery, what is going on here?

Jeff: Dad-dy, the mean Puerto Rican man got sent home by the other mean Puerto Rican man.

Fred:  Did Omar fire Tony?

Jeff: It was awful Dad-dy!  The mean man had his shirt off and the other man was saying all these mean things I didn’t understand.

Fred: In Spanish?

Jeff: It was like when our housekeepers fight.

Fred: That’s Spanish son. *takes Jeffy into his arms and give him his teddy* There There Jeffy, it’s ok…

Jeff: But Dad-dy it was so scary!  And… and …. The one guy said he wanted me to talk to the bad men with the cameras…

Fred:   I told you never talk to them!

Jeff: I didn’t! I didn’t! I Promise Dad-dy!

Fred: Good son… I know you didn’t

Jeff: Dad-dy will it be ok?  The bad men with the cameras said all sorts of bad things about me and your driver has been giving me dirty looks.

Fred:   Son, he’s the manager.  Please don’t say that to anyone.

Jeff: Dad-dy, is he the same nice man from the rootoonda?

Fred:   Son.. it’s called a RoTUNDA and no, that man died a long time ago

Jeff: Did the mean Puerto Rican Man kill him?

Fred: Tony didn’t kill Jackie Robinson, Jeffrey.  Now get ready for bed.

Jeff: Dad-dy will you read me a story first?

Fred: Sure son, as soon as I make a phone call to your Uncle Mikey on the radio.  I’ve got to do some grown up things.

Jeff: You’re the best Dad-dy.

Fred: Sweet dreams my little Dodger!

Fred is going to be doing damage control on WFAN in the next week with the “one ton ego”, mark my words.  He HAS to because his investment is a total and complete joke from the neck up.

Since the team is worth more than some small countries, maybe it’s time to act like a country and even get a seat in the UN. No wait…. Even better, let’s have a space program so we can send half the roster to Mars.

As far as Omar… I don’t know what to think.  I don’t hate his moves as GM, but his direct contact with the media must end today.  Over. Done.  Seeya!  Get a press secretary like our coked up ex President and go from there.  MLB teams shouldn’t need a press secretary, but there is no other way to keep Omar around and this team is covered like CNN covers the White House so what the hell right?

This was only funny because it went with winning

Man, I’d love a 78’ Yankee ending to this year so when the book comes out people think this is all cool.   Right now, it’s embarrassing to be a Mets fan.

Tony Tony Tony….

Notes from yesterday:

  • John Lennon errr.. Lannon beat the Mets. This shouldn’t shock anyone. And the flush goes round and round….

Ok, now to the news I really want to talk about… Tony Bernazard. The owners of this team hate being embarrassed, except when it comers to this clown who gets to do whatever he wants at all time. In what another executive called an “All time” story, this maniac took his shirt off and tried to fight the entire Binghamton Mets team. Maybe he was just showing off his man boobs …we’ll never know. Anyhow, this idiot needs to be on the last train to Clarksville yesterday. What exactly does he bring to the table to warrant years worth of bad publicity?

  • Can I have more than 1 one day every 25 years where I’m not embarrassed to be a Mets fan?
  • Lastly, Omar, please don’t tease us with Roy Halladay if you’re not serious. I’m sure you must have an angle, but haven’t we been through enough?

Where do we go from here?

Lets Go Mets Go!

On Saturday, the Mets took a one day break from the recurring nightmare and it seems that the only time we can count on that is once every five days. Without Johan, this team would be so far gone that they’d have a chance at the AAA title via falling out of the major leagues. Yesterday, I’m watching Fernando Nieve getting carted off the field in a glorified dump truck that looked like it was from 1959. The truck is rattling off the field and the camera is focused right on Fernando as his dazed head bounces back and forth. I just kept looking at that truck going further and further away and damned if it wasn’t microcosm of the whole season. Naturally, there was Jerry smiling as he’s walking back to the dugout. The icing on the cake was another steller performece by yours and my favorite…. Pete Falcone err…Randy Jones … no wait… Tim Redding.

Let’s all join together on this fine Monday morning for a nice round of “What the Hell?” What the hell is going on here? This is 1987 times 10. Rob Z pointed out that ESPN actually has Mets Injuries as a scrolling graphic now on their ticker. There are no words for something like this. Fred needs to get involved, figure out who needs to go (incuding his own kid if need be) and start making some buisness decisions here.

Say when!

So where do we go from here? Honestly, I believe more in what they shouldn’t do than what they should. There is nothing to sell off my fellow sad Met fans. The healthy vets aren’t worth what they’d bring back. I don’t want to trade Sheffield for some crap minor leaguer who’s be the 2011′s backup outfielder… I’d rather watch him hit for a couple more months. Same for Feliciano in the pen…we might need him down the road. Unless you’re going to fleece some team (see Mora for Mike Bordick, Issy for Billy Taylor), don’t start ripping things apart.

Omar, give me something to watch...

One thing I don’t get is why the team isn’t more focused on Roy Halladay. They have the prospects to get it done and more than enough money coming off the books next year. There’s simply not enough hitting talent on the roster or available next year to make a deep impact in the lineup, so why not go for the 1-2 punch? Just because they’re 8 games out right now, doesn’t mean you don’t improve. I know it would defiantly improve moral around here.

For what it’s worth, I do believe in miracles. I just would like to see a few players come back before I start believing in miracles at Citifield.

Singin’ In The Rain

As Gene stated below, the water is spinning in the toilet of a season we’re having and yesterday I missed my first game of the year. I’m jealous of all of you who got to enjoy yesterdays most recent embarrassing display. Umm… You Gotta Believe!?

For me, I went to Citifield because for a change, the Mets had no chance of losing. Paul McCartney christened the new ballpark with a killer show in the rain and I was there with my rain poncho to take it all in. By the way, Jeff & Fred are not only crappy baseball men, but also no fun as neither of them chose to show up (friends of mine took their tickets).

Maybe they were afraid to get within striking distance of a Mets fan??? Lucky for me, I made it through the infield without pulling a hammy (Met doctors might have me in a full body cast for 3 months) and settled at my seats. About 20 minutes before show time, I snuck into the seats I had been eyeing in the front for the 2 previous hours and away we went.

It was a cool experience… we had a very uncomfortable Susan Sarandon & her husband to our right, Pierce 007 Bronsnon getting harassed by several intoxicated ladies a row in back and my old rock fest buddy Sid Bernstein doing his thing nearby. For a middle aged cat, Macca can still rock. Along with the staple McCartney human juke box stuff he normally plays at shows…. he also pulled Day Tripper & a Day In A Life out of his ass. Very nice work! Check out my facebook page for more photos.1

And awaaaaaaay we go….

As Frankie Ghostbuster ended the virtual first half by slamming the door on the Reds potential heartbreaking comeback, I wondered what the next Benitez number should be.  Certain members of Kiner’s bullpen pleaded that he stay out of the panty closet while others wanted me to lock him in there.  What to do!?  In case it needs some explanation, the reason why “Armando the great” is featured in this way is payback for me pulling over on a dirt road in upstate NY in September 2001 to listen to the Mets “win” on WFAN.  It’s payback for watching the Mets “win” game 1 of the 2000 World Series.  It’s payback for the countless September phantom Met wins I sat to watch where the game was over and Mr. “I need to call my mom while soaking in a Milk Bath after each loss”  helped the other team create a “classic game” for their network.   Yeah, I’m, not over it.   Emily’s birthday is coming up, so perhaps he’ll have to jump out of a cake for her.

As long as baseball has taken a 3 day break from making me crazy, let’s sit back and examine a few things:

State of the Mets:

The same team that tripped into a freefall a few weeks ago is the same group that beat the Reds the last two games and delivered some optimism.  The reality is the team was never as bad as they were when we all had the runs.  If you looks at what’s left, there is still more payroll on the field than most other teams.  I refuse to accept anything less than .500 from the team on the field.

This is the kind of gritty player we need!

Frenchy: Anyone who wants Omar gone or ties his employment to Jerry’s needs to re-evaluate that concept.  To somehow grab the Braves’ version of David Wright (granted he hasn’t been that for 2 years) for a 30 year old dizzy average outfielder is a steal.  Remember, these are not the crafty Braves of old… this team has stunk for a few years now and certainly capable of being fleeced.   Most of their moves have backfired lately.  If you want Omar gone, I suggest you put your mind back to the way it was before he got here.

Take off the hats boys, you're not on the team.

Ownership: I’m rooting for a suspension like what happened in the Bronx so the team can get back on its feet.  Most of us have worked for impossible people at one point or another and I can just imagine what it’s like on the inside of Citi Field.  All the paranoia, lying to the press, budget restrictions & blind following of Bud Selig must be torture on a GM.   Do you think it’s Omar that won’t pay above slot in the draft?  Is it Omar who sent half the team to the WBC and ruined the season?  I heard in multiple places that the issue with the Mets medical situation is not the diagnosis, but rather the reactions to them.  Do you think Omar is sticking Church on a plane with a scrambled head or pressuring Reyes to blow out his hammy trying to push it too soon?  I’d put money on it being ownership.  Without Omar as a buffer, ownership will absolutely destroy this franchise.  They resent their own customer base, hate the brand and seem to be totally guessing at every pass.  I hope I live long enough to see the day this team changes hands and a real Met fan treats it like it should be treated. I wonder if Fred & Jeff can ever take their hands off the wheel and let experienced baseball men run this team completely (marketing on down).

Profile of a douchebag

Pedro: Go screw yourself Petey.  Seriously, I know how Boston felt now.  It seemed the entire time he was leaving Boston, the only place he wanted to go was the Yankees.  Now he wants to go to the Phillies… what a shocker!  The guy has no regard for his fan base and his legacy.  So what, he wants to come back and try to stop us from screwing up the Phillies September?   A Philly September meltdown with Pedro in the middle of it would be just great. It’s hard to believe he was my favorite Met for a brief time.  Move over Al Leiter, there’s a new dog in the house.

Changes to Citi Field:

Yeah yeah whatever.  Do me a favor Jeff… go to the park, peal the championship flags away from their view of the chop shops and put them where I can see them.  Do that, burn all the Dodgers’ Jerseys in the shops and we can talk.

*sings* I like Cheesey Poofs! We like Cheesey Poofs!

All Star Game: Did that happen yet?  I can’t get into it.  I watched a few old ones on the MLB network (I love that!) and spent some times thinking of ways this team can come back in the second half.  I liked the All Star game before interleague play, but I think you trade one for the other.  The novelty is gone and the fact that WS home field advantage is based on it is lunacy.  What I don’t understand is how everyone knows it’s a bad idea, but yet Bud is too stubborn to admit he’s wrong.  I wonder if his middle name is Wilpon?

Manny Acta:

Please god no.

I like what Fernando Tatis brings to the table

Jerry Manuel: If this season goes down in flames and Daniel Murphy’s plate appearances haven’t increased, I’d need an explanation.   I believe he’s forced to do a lot of things by ownership, so I don’t know what opinion is the educated one.  I’ll tell you what, him calling the Yankees the “marquee team in NY” and all the giggles didn’t win him any points on the Nik Meter.

Sooo… I hear Bobby V is available.

Injured players:

I get the issue with Reye’s legs needing to be sound, but if Beltran needs surgery I’d like him to pinch hit until October and then have it.  I saw him make a diving catch on the bum knee before he went on the DL, so tell me he can’t swing the bat at least once a game?  Honestly, one AB a game is still 60 fewer Jeremy Reed at bats right?  By August, it’s all hands on deck.  Any of these DLed prima donnas who doesn’t come back in August, shouldn’t come back in April.

Doc Halladay

You know you can do it Omar.  You have the prospects.  You have 20 million in salary coming off the books next year.  C’mon Omar do it! Do it! Do it!  Block him from Philly!  All the papers said “Halladay wants to be a Yankee”, but if you read him from a non-Yankee asslicker perspective, he’s saying he wants to be a Met.  What team is in the NL and in NY?  I think Neice, Murphy and one of the really young studs (not Holt) can do it.  Think about it, not many teams can pay him.  We got Yohan with half that.

That’s all I’ve got for now.  Think 1973 and I’ll see ya in the second half!

You never know
