Per the LA Times, Manny Ramirez, the star-studded tempermented outfielder who’s availability inspired rallies outside SNY studios and talk-radio fodder throughout the offseason, has been suspended 50 games by MLB for failing a drug test. No word yet on which Performance Enhancing Drug he took. He would be the biggest star ever to have been suspended over the new testing policy.
However, two sources told ESPN’s T.J. Quinn and Mark Fainaru-Wada that the drug used by Ramirez is HCG — human chorionic gonadotropin. HCG is a women’s fertility drug typically used by steroid users to restart their body’s natural testosterone production as they come off a steroid cycle. It is similar to Clomid, the drug Bonds, Giambi and others used as clients of BALCO.
Essentially, it appears to me that Manny was coming off steroids, probably during the offseason, and tried to get back to normal levels using this drug. Either that, or he’s having trouble getting pregnant.
