Per Adam Rubin of the Daily News, John Maine and Oliver Perez will face each other in a controlled game in Port St. Lucie (AKA The Dump, thanks Cliff Floyd) on Thursday.
Maine is expected back after missing one more turn to Fernando Nieve. Oliver Perez’s knee, says Dan Warthen, is the best it’s been all year. He says Perez could be back within two weeks. While some would argue otherwise, I for one would much rather have Inconsistent Ollie than Regurgitating Redding in the rotation.
Billy Wagner is expected to start throwing this week. Wagner feels so good he told Warthen he feels he could be back in the majors in a month. Warthen said that’s way too optimistic, but now feels that a return in August is probably if there are no setbacks.
Even if Wagner is a third of his old self, having him back setting up would be the equivalent of making a midseason trade for an 8th inning setup. If Wagner can come back down the stretch, him and Feliciano would make a deadly two handed punch to the Phillies late in ballgames.
Santana also refuted Rick Peterson’s assessment that there is trouble in his knee yesterday. He claims he has minor injuries but his main issue is just not being as sharp with his command.
