It’s a lot nicer to be on the other side of a shutout. Mike Pelfrey had his 2nd consecutive good performance and helped lead the Mets to a big 4-0 victory. Big Pelf gave up 7 hits in 6 1/3 innings while striking out 5 and walking 3. Pelf had very good velocity on his fastball tonight, occassionaly hitting 97 mph on the gun which was great to see. He got out of a few bases loaded jams, getting Clint Barmes to pop out to Luis Castillo in the 4th and fly out to Francoeur in the 6th. Hopefully Pelf can continue his recent success and help the Mets make a big playoff push.
On the offensive side, Francoeur continued to hit the ball well by knocking Murphy in with a base hit in the 2nd inning. Castillo also had another good day reaching base twice and scoring a run while Murphy and Wright had 2 hits each. Beating Marquis is not an easy task as Marquis is tied for the major league lead in wins, so it was good to see the Mets continue to swing the bats well. Marquis went 6 innings and gave up 3 runs on 7 hits keeping him at 12 wins for the year. If Frenchy can continue to drive in runs and Murphy can get some hits like he did today then the Mets should be able to stay in contention and hopefully make a big run when they get some of the big guys back. A trade for a bat would help as well so hopefully Omar can get something done even if it’s nothing major.
Tomorrow the Mets try to take 3 in a row from the Rockies with Johan Santana taking on Jason Hammel at 7:10.
