Game 18: Pitcher & Position Player of The Game: Niese Try, but No Win

Niese leaves a headline battle with Kershaw with an ankle injury, pen and bats struggle. But there still are nominees for:

Game 18: Scott Atchinson

Jeurys Familia had a better statistical line with 3 strikeouts in 1.2 IP as oppose to Atchinson’s one in 1.1, but when Familia came in the game was over. Atchinson came in with the game tied at two apiece in the middle innings and toed the line. Familia came in after Lyon and Edgin combined to give up 5. It will be interesting to see how long Mets stick with Edgin at the big league level, especially with a roster move needed for Marcum on Saturday.

Game 18: Daniel Murphy

Mets only managed four singles in the game. What’s frustrating is that three of them came off of Clayton Kershaw. The Mets patient approach worked well against Kershaw, who was off his game. They managed four walks, 2 runs, and he left after five with 111 pitches thrown. The problem was they did NOTHING vs the Dodgers’ bullpen. Four innings, no walks and a single hit. In my opinion this is the one danger of the patient approach: It’s a sound strategy vs starting pitchers, but against a bullpen it pays to be more aggressive. Relievers view walks as more damaging than starting pitchers, and tend to be more aggressive in the strike zone.

With that said, since Daniel Murphy had two of the four hits and was in the middle of two double plays, he gets the position player of the game. But it was a really poor showing by the Mets bats.
