Game 24: Jeremy Hefner

Hefner did everything that you can ask a replacement starter to do. No, that’s unfair to him. Hefner did everything that you can ask an MLB starter to do. On a night when most of the bullpen were either on fumes or out of commision, he pitched into the 9th inning. Hefner’s final line was 8IP, 1 er, 2 runs 8 K’s. Yes, it was the Fish without Stanton, but as we saw with Harvey the night before, they can still be dangerous if the pitcher’s not on. Hefner was on for 8 innings.

Unfortunately, a hard hit double start the unraveling. Then a bunt which was thrown to third resulted in a safe call from Mets’ friend Tim McClendon, who looked clearly off the bag both live and on replays.

I know many are getting on Lyon this morning but I cannot. If the Mets have first and third with nobody out vs a new relief pitcher in the ninth I’d expect at least 1 run minimum. Besides, his battery mate didn’t make things any better by giving up that passed ball/wild pitch. I’m not quite sure how you can’t be in a position to block the plate just after a mound visit from the pitching coach, but there you go.

All in all, great start by Hefner, unfortunately his offense and battery mate let him down. Remember the good old days when Mets had backup catchers like Todd Pratt and Ramon Castro?

Game 24: Daniel Murphy

Up until the 9th this was Recker’s spot, considering how well he and Hefner were in sync and he drove in the Mets lone run. But while he contributed a lot to the win, he contributed way too much to the loss to give him this spot. Instead Murphy gets it for scoring the lone run in the 5th off a hard hit double, and for his solid defense including two double plays.

If you think that sounds like a weak argument…..that’s cause it is. The Mets offense is dormant. Murphy and Duda had the only two hard hit balls all night. I do not know what can be done to fix it, but something has got to be done or we won’t have meaningful games in July, let alone August-September.
