Games 48: Pitcher & Position Player of The Game: Murphy doesn’t like being Robbed

Mets beat the Yankees. Need I say more?

Game 45: Jonathan Niese

Niese and Phil Hughes had a tremendous pitching duel, and neither earned a decision for it.

Niese: 7IP, 8 hits, 1 ER, 4 Ks

Hughes: 7IP, 4 hits, 1 ER, 6 Ks

Niese utilized the Official Pitcher’s Best Friend, the Double Play, three times to keep the Yankees off the board till the sixth. Unfortunately, a Duda flop resulted in a triple and subsequently scored. He gets a ND as Mets didn’t score till after he left. Quite literally. The first run came in the bottom of his last inning, the second an inning later.

Game 45: Daniel Murphy   David Wright

I know, headline is misleading. I have been going back and forth between these two. Murphy had a HR robbed via a Brett Gardner, then came back in the 8th with a single to give the Mets the lead as he slams the bat down in celebration, and twitter subsequently argues if this is a GOOD OR BAD thing and racism arguments. Cause #metstwitter is annoying.

BUT…………..while Murphy’s hit won the game, and if Gardner didn’t make the grab he’d have a great day, Wright had a better one. His home run in the 7th was a mammoth shot that got Niese off the hook and tied it up late. He also led the team in the field, making several great plays including two double plays. There was one groundout in particular, where the ball took an odd hop in the infield and Wright adjusts his arm angle to barehand it and throw to first. As big as Wright’s home run was, if someone else was at 3B for this game on the field I do not know if Niese would have kept the game to 1 run.
