Games 50: Pitcher & Position Player of The Game: Flushing Bombers invade Bronx

Mets scored 9 runs. To quote Gary Cohen, Yankee Stadium is a joke.

Game 50: Jeremy Hefner

The Mets playboy finally gets two things he’s been looking for all season: A win and run support. Usually goes hand to hand. While far from a dominating start, Hefner held the Yankees to one run in six innings, negotiating in and out of trouble.

Who scored the lone run for the Yankees? Travis Hafner. Someone has a sick sense of humor.

Game 50: Ike Davis

The Mets nine runs was a result of a collective effort. Everyone in the starting lineup got on base at least once, six different Mets had at least one RBI, 7 different Mets scored a run. So why Ike?

Looking back on the game, the critical moment came in the 1st inning. The Mets had already scored three runs, a cornucopia that likely caused Harvey and Niese to salivate. However, it’s pittance at Yankee Stadium. As anyone who saw Byrd’s home run in the third, a short fly out at Citifield is a Home Run at Yankee Stadium. Three runs is a cushion for Hefner, but not breathing room. Ike’s single to center, which forced starter David Phelps out of the game, gave the Mets a sizable lead that Hefner could work with. He was able to be aggressive without being overly concerned about the Home run.  I believe that is a big reason why Hefner had zero walks on the day. 5 runs early put pressure on the Yankees and let Mets breathe. It ended up being the most critical at bat of the game.
