Games 57: Pitcher & Position Player of The Game: Worst. 20 Innings. Ever.

A nightmarish marathon that would eventually lead to some changes.

Game 57: Shaun Marcum

This was a Harvey Day start. So what is Shaun Marcum doing up there in Bold? Well, it has nothing to do with Harvey. He once again excelled:

Matt Harvey: 7 innings, 6 hits, 1ER, ZERO BB, 6 strikeouts.

He actually would’ve gone longer but he felt stiffness in his back, so the Mets trainers rightfully took him out. He will make his next start, if he can convince Ray Ramirez that he does not need a walking boot.

The Mets bats were the issue. They were only able to score one run the entire game. That turns out to be an issue when the game goes twenty innings.  Enter Shaun Marcum, who was scheduled to have his start skipped after the rainout the previous night:

Marcum: 8 innings, 5 hits, 1 ER, ZERO BB, 7 Strikeouts

Eight innings of relief. Eight innings. 7 of which he pitched a shutout. That is above and beyond a “quality start” considering it was in relief. I understand it was his scheduled day but to go in, with that pressure, and perform the way he did was remarkable. I hope when we look back on this game we will remember his performance as well as we remember the bats absolute impotence.

Game 55: Juan Lagares

He had the lone RBI in the second inning when Ike Davis, following a walk, scored on a Lagares double. Nothing else for a twenty inning game. Argh.

The Mets were 0-19 with runners in scoring position. That should tell you everything you need to know.
