Games 75: Pitcher & Position Player of The Game: Byrd on the Rox

Marlon Byrd rocks all over Colorado both offensively and defensively behind Jeremy Hefner and Mets bullpen.

Game 73: Jeremy Hefner

The Mets Playboy Pitcher had an excellent, albeit short, outing vs the Colorado Rockies in the one-game makeup from the snowout in April. The Mets traveeled from Chicago to Denver for a 6:00pm EST start and then flew back to NY for a game Friday night. Thanks MLB Schedule makers!

Hefner was solid for six innings, allowing 2 runs, 1 earned, off 5 hits, 1 walk. He struck out three Rockies hitters.

Terry Collins chose to gave David Wright his first off day of the season (and considering the odd schedule, good idea Terry) and it cost the Mets a run in the second. With Rockies cather Wilson Rosario on second base, Rockies rookie 3b Nolan Arenado grounded out to rookie Zach Lutz, subbing at 3b for David Wright. Despite plenty of time to throw out Arenado, Lutz failed to look back Rosario who on the throw to 1b ran to third. Josh Satin at 1B tried to make up for Lutz’s mistake by throwing to 3B, but the throw was offline, resulting in the unearned run.

Hefner cruised from that point on, but with the Mets fielding a mostly-power free lineup, he was pinch hit for in the top of the seventh even though he had thrown only 80 pitches at that point. While Hefner Win-Loss record for June was just 1-1, he had a 1.80 ERA in 30 innings, allowing just 33 hits, 6 earned runs, and walking just 5 along with 23 strikeouts.

And to think he was almost booted from the rotation earlier this month.

Game 74: Marlon Byrd

No David Wright? No problem. Marlon Byrd hit the go-ahead two-run home run in the 8th inning that was the difference maker in the 3-2 Mets win. Marlon helped preserve the win in the 9th, when Cuddyer led the inning off with a single and decided with a 1-run deficit to test the arm of Marlon Byrd. Not a good idea. Byrd threw a strike to second base, gunning out Cuddyer for his 5th outfield assist. Parnell then closed the door and the Mets don’t have to go back to Colorado again.
