Games 80: Pitcher & Position Player of The Game: Hefner Recks D-Backs

Mets win a laugher, yes a laugher, behind the great pitching of Jeremy Hefner and a seven-run 7th inning on way to a 9-1 win.

Game 80: Jeremy Hefner

The Mets playboy pitcher has been the forgotten man when speaking about the Mets future rotation and in terms of Sandy Alderson finding “diamonds in the rough.” Hefner dominated the Arizona Diamondbacks for seven innings, allowing just a solo home run to Martin Prado, along with three additional hits and two walks. He struck out six Diamondback hitters. The only reason he didnt come out for the 8th was because of an hour and forty minute rain delay.

Hefner lowered his ERA to 3.54. He has a 2.20 ERA in his last 8 starts. He throws quality strikes and pitches deep into games. He’s born mere weeks after Dillon Gee and is under team control for a long time. Sometimes a guy makes it in MLB without being a “major prospect.” It’s time to start considering The Mets Playboy as one of the guys.

Game 79: Anthony Recker

Josh Satin almost got a second straight Position Player of the Day honors but it went instead to Anthony Recker, who went 2-4 with a run, two RBIs and a home run. The home run came in the 5th to break the scoreless tie off Arizona’s Patrick Corbin, a phenomenal young pitcher who is 9-1 with a 2.49 ERA after this game.

He also played a part in the seven-run seventh. After Josh Satin hit the go-ahead to give the Mets the lead, Andrew Brown walked to load the bases. Recker hit a single to give the Mets a two-run lead. That single was turned out to big as Daniel Murphy, pinch hitting for Hefner grounded out into a fielder’s choice. Had Recker, a .182 hitter, made the out Murphy probably would have grounded into a double play, leaving the bullpen to hold a small 1 run lead instead of what would eventually be an 8-run lead.
