Games 81: Pitcher & Position Player of The Game: Harvey has a Set-D-Back

Matt Harvey has his worst start of the year as the Mets reach the halfway point.

Game 81: David AArdsma

Before we get to AArdsma, we have to talk Harvey. Following a two hour rain delay Harvey had his worst game of the season. He struggled early on, allowing 2 hits in the first but got out of it. He appeared to have trouble all night putting away the top half of the Diamondbacks order.

The damage came in the sixth and seventh innings. A Cody Ross three run home run in the sixth put the Mets in a 3-2 hole. In a debatable move, despite being at 100 pitches Terry Collins sent out Harvey in the seventh. He would give up a walk, a single, and a double, allowing another run to score, before Terry Collins finally pulled him. Rice would come in with runners on second and third and allow a sac fly for Harvey’s fifth earned run on the night. Rice would then walk the next hitter, Kubel.

Which leads us to David AArdsma. With the score 5-2, bases loaded and only 1 out, he was asked to toe the line to give the Mets a chance to make a comeback. Cody Ross, who had already hit a home run, could easily put the game out of reach. AArdsma would get Ross to pop up, and then strike out Diamondbacks shortstop Pennington to end the threat.

Game 81: David Wright

The Mets scored three runs in this game, all via solo home runs. Wright and Satin hit home runs in the 4th , and Daniel Murphy cut the Mets deficit to 5-3 in the 8th. Wright edges the other two cause after Murphy’s home run, he put the Mets in a position to tie the game by hitting a double, allowing Marlon Byrd to represent the tying run in the bottom of the eighth. Byrd unfortunately would pop up, being too far in front on a breaking ball that if he had waited probably would have left the yard.
