Games 87: Pitcher & Position Player of The Game: Slam is the Word

Byrd has a grand slam of a time in support of a struggling Gee in San Fran.

Game 87: Scott Rice

Yes, the Pitcher of the Game pitched to just one batter. Gee struggled all game, allowing 5 runs on 9 hits and 5 walks in 6.2 innings. His command was off all night and he struggled to put away hitters. Carlos Torres pitched well and gave the pen a breather, allowing an unearned run in two innings, but that came after Mets had built a five run cushion.

Scott Rice entered the game with the score tied at five and runners on first and second for the Giants. While Brandon Crawford is not a dangerous hitter, he is no easy out either. A hit there, and the Giants pitch very differently in the 8th with the lead, and Mets probably don’t have the five run rally. It was a critical out at a critical time, exactly what you call a situational lefty for.

Game 86: Marlon Byrd

You can make the case for David Wright (2-3, 2 walks, 2 runs) and Anthony Recker (2 run home run) but the obvious choice is Marlon Byrd. Arguably the best value veteran in the league, Byrd hit a much-needed grand slam in the 8th to turn a one-run lead into a 5 run lead. With four out of their last five games decided by two runs or less, this was a much needed reprieve. It also allowed Terry Collins and Dan Warthen to use just Scott Rice and Carlos Torres out of the pen, and give the rest of the crew a much needed break following the 16-inning game the night before.
