Game 123-4: Pitcher & Position Player of The Game: Ump’s Call leads to Brave Split

Mets finally come home for a two game series against World Series Contender Atlanta, and end up hurting their chances right in the face.

Game 123: Zack Wheeler

It was a learning experience day for the Mets rookie phenom. Crusing through six innings, Wheeler started the seventh with a ground out and a strikeout. That third out proved problematic. He allowed a double and two consecutive walks before being removed for Carlos Torres. Dan Warthen and Terry Collins gave him the opportunity to work out of trouble, but at 114 pitches and two consecutive walks his night was done. Torres would allow all three baserunners to score on an Andrelton Simmons double.

Wheeler’s final line in the 5-3 Mets win: 6.2 Innings Pitched, 3 runs off six hits and 3 walks. He struck out five.

Game 124: Jonathan Niese

Niese got the hard-luck no decision in this game, going 7 innings and allowing just 1 run off five hits and three walks. He struck out 9 Atlanta hitters. Unfortunately the Mets offense was held in check by Alex Wood and the Braves pen, so the game went into extra innings. Yes, a Mets game went into extras, Shocking.

In extras the umpire missed an easy out call at 1B that could and should have ended the inning, but instead extended it long enough to allow Greg Burke to throw 1 pitch. That one pitch resulted in a 3-run home run. Subsequently Daniel Murphy and Terry Collins would be ejected for arguing with the ump. Burke was demoted the next day, replaced by the Newest Mets acquisition, Daisuke Matsusaka, aka Dice-K.

Game 123: Ike Davis

Davis was 2-4 with a home run off ex-Met Luis Ayala to extend the lead. Travis d’Arnaud got his first hit, a double, in the game.

Game 124: Josh Satin

Satin provided all of the Mets offense with a solo home run in the 4th inning.
